The Cleveland Browns made their first deal on the NFL trade deadline, dealing a pass rusher to an NFC contender.
Cleveland traded defensive end Joe Tryon-Shoyinka and a seventh-round pick to the Chicago Bears for a sixth-round pick, according to ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter. Tryon-Shoyinka signed a one-year, $4.75 million contract with the Browns this offseason.
“Another trade: Browns are sending DE Joe Tryon-Shoyinka and a seventh-round pick to the Chicago Bears in exchange for a sixth-round pick, per sources. Chicago lost DE Dayo Odeyingbo to a season-ending Achilles injury on Sunday, and now trade for a potential replacement two days later,” Schefter wrote on X.
Cleveland didn’t get much in return for Tryon-Shoyinka, who didn’t have much of an impact for the Browns. He played in 8 games, recording 9 tackles, and was a backup behind Myles Garrett.
The Bears, meanwhile, add some pass rush help to shore up their defense, which has struggled this season. Chicago is off to a 5-3 start and is just outside the playoff picture.
Tryon-Shoyinka was selected in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He played four years with the Buccaneers and signed with the Browns after Tampa Bay declined its fifth-year option on him.
In his NFL career, Tryon-Shoyinka has recorded 147 tackles, 15 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, and 1 fumble recovery.
Browns Were Expected to be Buyers Ahead of Deadline
Although Cleveland traded away Tryon-Shoyinka, the Browns were expected to be buyers ahead of the deadline.
Cleveland wanted to add more impactful players to the roster. Schefter reported that the Browns were expected to be buyers ahead of the deadline.
“While Cleveland already has completed three trades in the past month — acquiring offensive tackle Cam Robinson, sending quarterback Joe Flacco to Cincinnati, and swapping cornerbacks with Jacksonville — most sources believe that the Browns will be buyers more than sellers before the deadline,” Schefter wrote.
“The Browns do not sound inclined to trade tight end David Njoku, but they have been calling around the league, still looking to add quality young players to their roster.”
If the Browns are indeed buyers, perhaps that means the likes of David Njoku and Jerome Ford could remain in Cleveland, despite both being pending free agents.
Insider Urges Cleveland to Acquire Receiver Help
If the Browns are going to be buyers, Cleveland could look to add help on offense.
NFL analyst Daryl Ruiter of 92.3 The Fan urged Cleveland to make a move to acquire receiver help.
“I would try and add an offensive tackle and a wide receiver,” Ruiter said on Monday. Preferably a wide receiver more than 6 feet tall. … I just think that is where the priority should be. I don’t think the Browns need draft picks; they need players at this point. It would be great if Andrew Berry could pull off another Greg Newsome-Tyson Campbell trade and bring in another player who can help this football team out.”
Ruiter believes the Browns need to see what they have in Gabriel, which is why Cleveland should acquire receiver help. He also doesn’t think the Browns should trade away Wyatt Teller or any of the offensive linemen.
“I’m not a fan of trading any of the offensive linemen, even the guys on expiring contracts,” Ruiter added. “I just don’t think that makes sense when you have young quarterbacks and you already have offensive line problems as it is.”
The Browns will go on the road to play the New York Jets on Sunday.
