The Cleveland Browns could look to a familiar face as they look to build out their quarterback room this offseason under Todd Monken.
The Browns are set to enter next season with Deshaun Watson, Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel under contract. But Cleveland is expected to explore all their options to build out their quarterback room. One name with links to both the Browns and Monken is Tyler Huntley.
“The Browns are still hamstrung by Deshaun Watson’s mega-deal, but he’s not a sure bet to start in 2025 — let alone be healthy,” Locker said. “Monken may also be intrigued by Shedeur Sanders, who underperformed as a rookie despite boasting discernible pre-draft talent. Inserting Huntley into the starting mix would give Cleveland another decent option in what figures to be another rebuilding season considering the team’s extensive offensive needs.”
One plus for the Browns is that Huntley has a relationship with Sanders. The two bonded last season during Huntley’s brief time with the team.
“I would say I’m thankful that Huntley here,” Sanders said during the preseason. “He gave me a perspective of quarterback that I feel like I needed … I feel like God’s sent him here for a reason, honestly, just to talk and to be like a mentor towards me and his career, also. But being in that backup role, he faced that also in his career and he just gave me the mentality on what I need to do and how I need to stay on top of everything. Just helping me out throughout everything.”
Browns HC Todd Monken Intrigued by Deshaun Watson
There’s a chance that the Browns could give Watson serious consideration for the starting job. He’s played just 19 games since arriving in Cleveland via a blockbuster trade in 2022 and missed all of last season recovering from a pair of Achilles surgeries.
However, Monken is intrigued by Watson’s potential and resume, which includes three Pro Bowl selections during his time with the Houston Texans.
“You’ve got two young players that still have a long way to go in terms of development, and that’s part of the learning curve in the NFL,” Monken said of Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders. “And then you’ve got a player like Deshaun, who’s coming back from injury and at one time was a Pro Bowl player, and an elite player in this league, that we would love to tap back into that.”
As it stands, Sanders will likely get first crack at being QB1 He started the final seven games last season, going 3-4 in those contests.
