It’s tough to say that Sunday’s contest against the Green Bay Packers was a bad day for the Dallas Cowboys. On paper, the Cowboys‘ defense was expected to be one of the worst in the NFL, but it’s been much worse than some thought throughout the first few weeks of the season.
Ultimately, for the Cowboys to be the team they’re looking to be in the future, that’ll have to be fixed.
However, Sunday was a step in the right direction, playing really well against an excellent Packers team. While it ended in a tie and not a loss, there are still things that the Cowboys can build upon from it.
But owner Jerry Jones continues to take it a step too far.
At this point in the season, there wouldn’t be anything to suggest that the Cowboys are a playoff team. A defense that bad typically doesn’t end well, no matter how talented the offense might be when it’s all clicking. George Pickens looks great, Dak Prescott is probably the most underrated quarterback in the NFL, and CeeDee Lamb will be elite per usual when he returns from injury. When all three get going, the Cowboys should be fine.
However, Jones has to stop saying this is a playoff team until he fixes the defense.
“I think we’re building,” Jones said, per the team. “We’ve got some guys that aren’t on the field, everybody does. But we’ve got some talented guys that we can bring in, and a couple of those out there that are getting reps, Bland, those guys are going to make us better. They’ll do a better job of being disciplined in that secondary.”
“I feel like our team can compete…” Jones said. “I certainly do feel like we’re a competing team for the playoffs. At this particular point, with as many games as we’ve got, that’s not necessarily getting out over your ski’s.”
Are the Cowboys Playoff Contenders?
Could the Dallas Cowboys eventually make the postseason? Of course, given some of the talent on the roster, but there isn’t anything to suggest that Jones should feel confident in them doing so as of now.
Despite the tie, which is boring for everyone involved, Jones wasn’t too upset with how the game ended on Sunday night. The NFL has the rules in place, and teams have to live with them.
Jones even admitted that he felt better than he could’ve, adding that he wanted to win the game, but more importantly, he didn’t want to lose it. For the Cowboys, it could come back to help them in the long run, depending on how things unfold.
“Better than I could’ve felt…” Jones said. “I feel better than I could’ve felt, but worse than I could’ve felt as well…”
“It would’ve been great to have gone ahead and complete that smile and not had that tie and had that win under all of the circumstances… I wanted to win that game tonight. And I didn’t want to lose it.”
Cowboys Have Confidence After Tie Against Packers
The Dallas Cowboys were a second away from beating the Green Bay Packers, literally. Jordan Love threw a pass in the back of the end zone, with one second remaining. The pass was incomplete, allowing the Packers to kick an easy field goal to tie the game in overtime.
It sounds like Jones thought he had the win in the bag.
“We said we’d won the game. We jumped up and said ‘We’ve won this game! The time is out.'” Jones said.
“No, I think you’ve got to have a time frame of – there’s a time to have the games end, there’s a lot of reasons for that,” Jones said. “I’m good, as long as everybody understands that they do end and can end in a tie, I’m good with it.”
