The Dallas Cowboys aren’t making the right decision with Micah Parsons, one of the top players in the NFL, if not the best. It’s clear that Parsons deserves to be played like some of the other top edge rushers in the NFL, with Myles Garrett and T.J. Watt recently getting long-term deals.
Watt became the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history, while Garrett isn’t too far off.
Parsons, who is expected to secure a deal larger than both of theirs due to his age and their contracts being finalized before his, is rightfully frustrated.
However, according to a recent report from Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, Parsons may face some consequences for his decision not to practice at training camp if he leaves.
“If a player leaves the team, during training camp or the regular season, he has five days to return. If he doesn’t, the team can place the player on its reserve list as a retired player,” Florio wrote. “And if that happens under those specific circumstances, the player cannot play again that year. For any team. His contract gets tolled. Everything freezes in place. It’s a no-win situation for the player.”
Cowboys’ Micah Parsons takes precautions
Parsons recently cited a back injury as the Dallas Cowboys are on the field, but it doesn’t sound like it’s anything major.
Ultimately, it’s clear that he doesn’t want to practice because he’s worried about getting hurt before he gets his deal.
When speaking to reporters about the situation, he noted that he wants to stay with the Cowboys, but he has to do what’s best for himself. Even though he wants to stay with the Cowboys, he understands that Jerry Jones is the one who signs the checks.
“I don’t know. We’ll see, we’ll see how long things take,” Parsons said via Jon Machota of The Athletic. “There’s not really much movement, man. I want to be here. I’ve always stated I want to be here, but you know, at the end of the day, they sign the checks like always. Let’s see if they want me to be here at the end of the day.”
Will the Cowboys let Micah Parsons walk?
Parsons has every reason to feel the way he does, and he also has to understand, which he does, that it’s a business.
If Jones doesn’t think he’s worth a certain amount of money for the Dallas Cowboys, there’s a very good chance he won’t get it.
However, when speaking about the business aspect, he seemingly called out Jones.
He noted that the Jones’ family will take care of themselves, and he expects them to, but he also has to show them that he’ll have to take care of his family.
“Honestly for me, it doesn’t matter. I’ve been pretty consistent. If they don’t want me here, they don’t want me here. I’ll go about my business. I understand the nature of the business,” Parsons said via The Athletic.
“As far as I’m here and under contract, I’m going to do what I have to do to perform at the highest level, but if this is the end, this is the end. Same with the Joneses. Jerry Jones, Stephen Jones and the other Jerry Jones [Jerry Jr.] take care of their family, the same way I need to take care of my family. I got three kids of my own, so we all need to take care of our own family at the end of the day.”
