Whatever you might think of how the Dallas Cowboys have started the 2025 regular season, there is one overriding fact that can’t be denied.
That fact is quarterback Dak Prescott is playing his position as good as anyone in the NFL right now.
The latest example came in a thrilling, 40-40 tie with the Green Bay Packers at AT&T Stadium in Week 4. Prescott made one brilliant play after another on the way to going 31-of-40 passing for 319 yards, 3 touchdowns and no interceptions to go with one rushing touchdown.
Bleacher Report’s Brent Sobleski gave Prescott the highest mark for his performance against the Packers in his Week 4 QB grades — one of just 2 quarterbacks alongside Los Angeles Rams star Matthew Stafford to receive an “A+” in Week 4.
The tie sent the Cowboys‘ record to 1-2-1 headed into highly winnable, back-to-back road games against the New York Jets in Week 5 and Carolina Panthers in Week 6.
“When operating at a high level, Prescott can be as dangerous as any other passer,” Sobleski wrote on September 28. But a somewhat different and better version appeared against a quality Packers defense. Over the last few years, Prescott could get locked onto throwing in CeeDee Lamb’s direction. Lamb wasn’t in the lineup, though, because of an ankle injury. Thus, the Dallas Cowboys‘ passing attack was far more balanced, with Prescott spreading the ball to George Pickens, Jalen Tolbert, KeVontae Turpin and tight end Jake Ferguson.
Prescott was only sacked once — by former teammate Micah Parsons — but it came on the most important play of the game as Prescott was scrambling and appeared like he had a clear shot at running for what would have been the game winning touchdown in overtime.
Prescott Mostly Escaped Scrutiny in Offseason
Aside from one time popping off and saying something really dumb, Prescott mostly escaped the scrutiny that has dogged him almost every offseason of his career thanks to the prolonged drama between Parsons and owner Jerry Jones that eventually led to Parsons being traded to the Packers on August 28 in exchange for 2 first round picks and 2-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Kenny Clark.
Prescott is no stranger to being under the microscope. It comes with the territory after becoming the NFL’s highest paid player with each of his last 2 contracts — a 4-year, $160 million contract in 2020 and a 4-year, $240 million contract in 2024 that made him the NFL’s first $60 million per year player.
If Prescott can somehow will the Cowboys into the playoffs this season, it’s not a stretch to say it would be his greatest accomplishment as a pro and, in all likelihood, make him a legitimate NFL MVP candidate.
Prescott Was NFL MVP Runner-Up in 2023
It was easy to think Prescott was washed after he missed the final 9 games of the 2024 regular season with a hamstring injury. It’s also easy to forget he’s consistently been one of the NFL’s elite regular season quarterbacks.
In 2023, Prescott led the NFL with 36 touchdown passes and finished as NFL MVP runner-up to Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson — it was also the only time Prescott has been named NFL All-Pro.
