Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys have gotten off to a slower and lower key start to NFL free agency than many fans were expecting.
That being said, there are still quality players available and the team is starting to make some aggressive moves. Early Friday morning at 12:22 a.m. ET, news broke that the Cowboys had made a move to bring in a free agent defensive back.
According to a report from ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler, Dallas is going to sign former Los Angeles Rams cornerback Cobie Durant to a one-year contract.
“The Cowboys plan to sign cornerback Cobie Durant to a one-year deal, sources tell @toddarcher and me,” Fowler wrote on X.
Durant may not be a household name, but he is coming off of a quality season with the Rams. He’ll have a chance to make a big impact on the Cowboys’ defense in 2026.
What Are the Dallas Cowboys Getting in Cobie Durant?
Throughout the course of the 2025 NFL season in Los Angeles, Durant played in all 17 games. He racked up 40 total tackles to go along with a fumble recovery, three interceptions, a defensive touchdown, and seven defended passes.
At 28 years old, Durant has played the first four years of his career with the Rams. In total, he has recorded 141 tackles, two sacks, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, seven interceptions, two defensive touchdowns, and 26 defended passes.
Jones is taking a flier on a sleeper free agent. Durant was not talked about much leading up to NFL free agency, but he could end up being a major steal.
These are the kinds of gambles that can make a good team great if they pay off.
What Have the Cowboys Already Done in NFL Free Agency?
The biggest move of the offseason thus far has been the trade to acquire pass rusher Rashan Gary from the Green Bay Packers. Dallas only had to give up a 2027 fourth-round pick to make that deal happen.
Jones also made the move to sign safety Jalen Thompson to a three-year, $36 million deal. P.J. Locke, a safety formerly of the Denver Broncos, signed a one-year, $5 million deal.
There were also a few smaller free agency moves made.
As for the trade market, the Cowboys have been busy. They decided to ship Osa Odighizuwa to the San Francisco 49ers for a third-round pick and also shipped out defensive lineman Solomon Thomas to the Tennessee Titans. Of course, George Pickens received the franchise tag earlier in the offseason.
Expect to see Dallas continue to make moves. The Cowboys are focused solely on getting back into Super Bowl contention in 2026. To make that happen, more moves need to be made.
