The Denver Broncos are officially in uncharted territory.
With Bo Nix suffering a season-ending ankle injury in overtime of the Broncos Divisional Round win over the Bills, the conversation around Denver’s quarterback situation has taken a wild turn.
Some analysts have floated a crazy hypothetical that sounds more like a Hollywood script than an NFL reality.
This wild hypothetical involves a very late-season reunion between Sean Payton and legendary quarterback Drew Brees in Denver.
The idea was first raised by Billy Heyen of The Sporting News.
He framed Brees as the most obvious “miracle” option Payton could even consider given their long history together in New Orleans.
Around the same time, Yahoo Sports contributor Finnegan Twomey explored a similar angle.
He asked whether the Broncos could follow the Indianapolis Colts’ recent Philip Rivers playbook by pulling a veteran quarterback out of retirement for a playoff run.
John Breech of CBS Sports also floated the idea, mentioning Drew Brees alongside other long-shot quarterback options such as Cam Newton and Andrew Luck.
While these are fun conversations, the idea of Brees coming out of retirement at age 47 is highly unlikely.
Why a Drew Brees Reunion Can’t Actually Happen
As quickly as the idea gained traction, Yahoo Sports and The Sporting News were equally quick to explain why it can’t become reality.
According to the NFL rules, this cannot actually happen.
Brees retired while still under contract with the New Orleans Saints, which placed him on the Reserve/Retired list.
That means the Saints still control his playing rights.
Even if Brees wanted to return, and even if his body cooperated, the Broncos couldn’t sign him outright.
The only way Denver could acquire Brees would be through a trade, and trades are prohibited during the postseason.
Still, the speculation naturally circles back to the history between Payton and Brees.
From 2006 through 2021, the duo won over 100 regular-season games.
He led New Orleans to consistent offensive dominance, and delivered the franchise’s only championship with a win in Super Bowl XLIV.
Under Payton’s system, Brees became the NFL’s all-time leading passer.
The Saints ranked among the league leaders in yards, touchdowns, completion percentage, and efficiency under the legendary QB-head coach duo.
While it’s fun to reminisce about their history together, a reunion is impossible.
Denver Is Rolling With Jarrett Stidham
As fun as the Brees talk may be, Denver’s actual plan is far more grounded.
Payton has made it clear the Broncos are moving forward with Jarrett Stidham as their starter.
He’s expressed full confidence in the backup stepping into the spotlight:
“He’s ready,” Payton said. “I’ve got a No. 2 that’s capable of starting for a number of teams.”
Payton even added a warning to doubters: “Watch out. Just watch.”
Rather than chasing miracles, the Broncos are choosing belief in their locker room.
This team is 15-3 for a reason, and while it may not be ideal to lose your franchise QB before the AFC Championship, there is full belief that this team can still bring home the Lombardi Trophy.
The Drew Brees reunion may live on as a fascinating ‘what if,’ but Denver’s postseason now rests firmly in the hands of those already in the building.
