Earlier this month, Detroit Lions GM Brad Holmes created some much-needed financial flexibility for his club by restructuring the contract of quarterback Jared Goff. They converted $40 million of his base salary into a signing bonus, freeing up $32 million in salary cap space for the 2026 season.
The move also added a void year to the deal and reduced his 2026 cap hit to $37.6 million.
Now, a key clause in Goff’s contract was activated that automatically fully guarantees $18 million of his contract, according to a report from Spotrac.
Additionally, punted Jack Fox, who has emerged as one of the more reliable players at his position, earned a $250K roster bonus.
Goff, who agreed to a four-year, $212 extension with the Lions in 2024, posted elite statistics in the recently completed 2025 NFL season.
His 4,564 passing yards and 32 touchdown throws ranked second amongst his NFL quarterback peers, while he also finished third overall with a 105.5 passer rating.
In 2024, The Detroit Lions Re-Signed Jared Goff To A Four-Year Extension
At the time of his contract extension, the Lions made Goff the second-highest paid quarterback in the NFL behind Joe Burrow with a $53 million annual salary.
For Goff, it completed a process showing that he had no interest in leaving the Lions, where he found a home following the blockbuster trade in 2021 from the Los Angeles Rams for Matthew Stafford.
“I’ve been doing it for nine years now and I’m kind of used to it. I obviously appreciate my teammates’ support, but it’s been easy,” Goff said in April 2024. “Just focus on what matters and trying to get better and trying to help our team win games, advance further than we did last year and hopefully be the last team standing at the end. That’s all I’m thinking about.”
“We’ve got a lot of work to do,” Goff continued. “The expectations are high, but internally, our standards are raising, and our expectations are raising, and we’ve got goals and things we want to do. It’s not like we’re going to show up and start winning again.”
Goff and the Lions raced out of the gate in 2024, eventually finishing atop the NFC North Division for the second consecutive season with a pristine 15-2 record. However, their season came to a stunning and disappointing close with a postseason loss to the Washington Commanders at Ford Field.
They followed that up with an inconsistent 9-8 campaign in the 2025 NFL season that saw them finish on the outside looking in at the postseason for the first time since 2023.
