The Detroit Lions evened up their preseason record at 1-1 thanks to their 17-13 victory over the visiting Washington Commanders at Ford Field on Saturday afternoon.
Once again, the Lions were mostly comprised of reserve players hoping to make a good enough impression upon Detroit’s coaching staff to earn a coveted roster spot.
The Lions utilized backup quarterbacks Luke Altmyer and Joshua Dobbs during the contest, and according to head coach Dan Campbell, both players had their positive moments during the game along with moments that they need to clean up.

Following the contest, head coach Dan Campbell took to the podium to address the performance of both quarterbacks.
It was Dobbs who started the game, and things went awry immediately, as he fumbled on the second play from scrimmage, resulting in a Commanders touchdown. But from that point on, in the eyes of Campbell, he settled in.
“Man, I thought there were highs and lows, you know, certainly you don’t want to start the game the way we did, you know, now that’s not all on him (Dobbs),” Campbell said. “But he got out of it. And I thought that run was big. You know, that’s something that he is capable of. That was a big third-down run for a touchdown.”
During the contest, Dobbs finished 7-of-12 passing for 74 yards and an interception. He would later be replaced by Luke Altmyer, who finished 9-of-13 passing for 86 yards.
“And, Altmeyer, I still think he sees the field really well,” Campbell said. “There’s just a couple of things he got on him and it’s always going to be about for him is, man, can he play a little bit faster? Which I know he can play clean. He just needs reps, and the more reps he gets, the better he is. So, you know, it wasn’t perfect, but I thought both of those guys did some good things, and there are some things to clean up.”
The Lions Have One More Preseason Game Remaining
The Lions have one remaining preseason game left on their slate, as they’re scheduled to take on the Indianapolis Colts next Saturday, Aug. 29.
Following that game, they’ll begin preparations for their Sept. 13 regular season home opener against the visiting New Orleans Saints in Week 1.
Whether or not the Lions decide to give starter Jared Goff some reps remains to be seen.
