Following what was an ultimately disappointing result to the 2025 NFL season that saw them finish 9-8 and miss the NFL Playoffs for the first time since 2023, the Detroit Lions will have their sights trained on proving that was an anomaly.
And while their official schedule release hasn’t happened yet, the Lions have confirmed the date and time of what will be their first game overseas since 2015 against the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Detroit Lions Officially Have Their Overseas Game Date And Time Set
The Lions, who are playing in Munich, Germany this season, will face their yet to be confirmed opponent on November 15, which will be Week 10 of the upcoming season.
Coverage will begin at 9:30 a.m. ET on Fox.
“The Lions have the date set for their game in Germany,” wrote Detroit sports Insider Brad Galli on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Detroit will play on November 15 in Munich, kicking off their Week 10 game at 9:30 a.m. ET on FOX.”
The news was also confirmed by Fox CEO Lachlan Murdoch.
The Lions will play at FC Bayern Munich Stadium, and it will be two weeks before the annual Thanksgiving Day game at Ford Field, which will take place on November 26 against a yet to be announced opponent.
This marks the third time that the Lions have played overseas, with both previous occasions taking place at Wembly Stadium in London. In 2014, they completed a massive comeback over the Atlanta Falcons, winning 22-21 thanks to a late field goal from kicker Matt Prater.
The following year, the Lions were defeated by a whopping 45-10 final score at the hands of the Kansas City Chiefs.
Lions President Rod Wood Hinted At An NFC North Divisional Opponent For Their Germany Game
Speaking last month, Lions president Rod Wood hinted that not only were there teams vying to face them in Munich, but that it could ultimately be a divisional opponent.
“So if you are chosen to play internationally, you used to be able to eliminate all your division opponents so you wouldn’t have to play a division opponent in an international game,” Wood said. “They changed that rule a couple years ago given how many international games we’re playing now. You start eliminating that many teams it makes it difficult to schedule, so we got to eliminate two teams.”
“I know there’s a couple of teams that are campaigning to be our opponent there, who also has interest in marketing in Germany,” Wood said. “So I would suspect it might be one of those two teams that I know are anxious to play us over there and would not be a division opponent, but it’s possible to be the Bears.”
However, Wood said that he doesn’t anticipate the Lions returning overseas for the 2027 NFL season, as it’s not been brought up to him.
“I would never say never, but nobody’s brought it up to me, so I’m hoping that they would have brought it up to me by now if that’s going to happen, so I don’t think that’s likely.”
