It’s all smiles in the Motor City this week, because the mighty Detroit Lions pummeled Chicago Bears on home turf during the team’s first game against the Windy City headed up by former Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson. There was certainly something personal about the game, and the Lions didn’t leave any question in the minds of anyone that they will be doing just fine without Johnson in the fold, following that 52-21 win.
The win was needed after that initial game against the Green Bay Packers. We don’t need to dwell on the past, but it was a rough opening game for the Lions, and they more than redeemed themselves against the Bears. Most in the Lions‘ camp would agree that beating Johnson and the Bears, at least at this point in the season, is what mattered most.
Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff had some fantastic numbers during his game against the Bears. There was no stopping this player, and according to ESPN, Goff finished “with a near perfect passer rating (156.0) while throwing for 334 yards and five touchdowns.” Now, he’s getting some much-deserved recognition from the NFL.
Jared Goff of the Detroit Lions Gets Major Honor
Goff has picked up his first big honor of the 2025-26 season, and it came early on Week 2. Goff has been named the NFC Offensive Player of the Week following the win over the Chicago Bears.
Goff should soak up this honor and enjoy it all week long. After the Lions’ loss to the Packers, some in the NFL said it was a sign that Goff wouldn’t thrive without the direction and guidance of Johnson, but he proved them all wrong against Williams and the Bears. Goff was able to show that he’ll be just as reliable and successful this season. That should make the Motor City very excited for the rest of the season.
Ben Johnson and Jared Goff Have a Testy Moment
Did you see that moment following the game between Goff and Johnson? This was a doozie. After the game, first, Johnson first had a very quick handshake with Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell. Then, footage caught Goff trying to catch up to his former boss and shake his hand.
Goff rushed over to Johnson and tried to catch him before he left the field, but Johnson didn’t seemed interested in at all. In a video shared on X by Dov Kleiman on Tuesday, September 16, Kleiman notes, “Ben Johnson’s beef with the Lions is real. Jared Goff literally had to chase him down. He didn’t wait to say hi to anyone.” This is a wild look and not a great one for Johnson.
It would have been nice to see Johnson have a slightly warmer embrace for Campbell and Goff, but he seemed very mad and just not wanting to see them at all. Reach out to me with your thoughts. Next up, the Detroit Lions will take on the Baltimore Ravens for Monday Night Football. This should be another good matchup, and the Lions are underdogs.
