The Detroit Lions have been in offseason mode ever since their final game of the season, which was on Sunday, January 4, with a win over the Chicago Bears on the road. But, for those still making their way to the big game, such as former Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford, it’s been anything but the offseason.
Stafford was the Detroit Lions’ franchise quarterback from 2009 to 2020, and even though he never took the team all the way, there is still a lot of love for Stafford in Detroit. Sure, Jared Goff is the team’s franchise quarterback now, but it’s difficult not to keep an eye on Stafford’s career, especially when he’s on track to win the Los Angeles Rams another Super Bowl.
Stafford and the Rams advanced to the NFC championship after a win over the Chicago Bears in in the Windy City on Sunday, January 18, in a tight, 20-17 final score. Now, Stafford and Los Angeles will take on the red-hot Seattle Seahawks in the NFC championship on Sunday, January 25, at 6:30 p.m. ET.
Ahead of the Rams and Seahawks matchup, the Los Angeles Rams have announced Stafford news, and it makes his year that much sweeter.
News on Former Detroit Lions Quarterback Matthew Stafford
On Monday, January 19, the news broke that Stafford was named to the 2025 PFWA All-NFL and All-NFC Teams. The honor comes from accredited writers covering all 32 NFL teams, who voted on the PFWA’s All-NFL, All-AFC Teams after the end of the 2025-26 NFL regular season.
“A total of seven repeat honorees and 16 first-time selections are part of the 2025 All-NFL team, chosen in voting conducted by the Professional Football Writers of America (PFWA),” the organization said in a statement.
It’s just another bit of good news for the seasoned quarterback who’s expected to pick up MVP honors.
Another Honor for Matthew Stafford
Speaking of MVP, on Wednesday, January 21, the Pro Football Writers of America also announced that Stafford has been voted the league’s Most Valuable Player for 2025. It’s his first time ever winning the award and could be a good sign for his changes at the NFL Honors show next month when the Associated Press awards are announced.
For the Pro Football Writers award, Stafford beat out Drake Maye for NFL MVP.
This season, Stafford led the NFL with 46 touchdown passes and 4,707 passing yards, scoring honors as a first-team All-Pro for the first time in his career. He also had 12 more touchdown passes and 143 more yards passing than every other quarterback in the league for the 2025-26 season.
The Los Angeles Rams shared the good news on X, stating, “PFWA has named Matthew Stafford their 2025 MVP.”
Stafford signed a new contract with the Los Angeles Rams during the offseason, but how long will he really stay with the Rams? There’s been talk that he may want to retire after the 2025-26 season, and if he leads the team to another Super Bowl, it would seem appropriate to go out on top. Even if he doesn’t, he’s already led them to the NFC championship game, which is no little task.
