Wide receiver Romeo Doubs was the subject of NFL trade rumors throughout 2025. But he remained with the Green Bay Packers to lead the team in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns.
Entering 2026, the question is whether the Packers are ready to move on without Doubs or re-sign him before free agency.
Green Bay general manager Brian Gutekunst appeared to understand the situation when he addressed it at the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine this week. Doubs could have an opportunity for a big payday this March.
But that doesn’t mean Gutekunst isn’t open to Doubs returning to the Packers.
“We’re still kind of going through that process,” Gutekunst told reporters Tuesday, via Pro Football Talk’s Myles Simmons. “Romeo’s done a fantastic job for us over his four years with the Green Bay Packers — very consistent, his work ethic is second to none.
“Again, we’d love to have him back. And if we do, he’ll be a big part of our football team. And if we don’t, I’m sure he’ll be very successful wherever he goes.”
Doubs will be an unrestricted free agent in March after completing his rookie contract with the Packers. He was first for the team with 55 receptions and registered a career-high 724 receiving yards in 2025.
Could Packers Re-Sign WR Romeo Doubs?
With his comments on Doubs at the combine, Gutekunst is clearly leaving the door open to the receiver returning. But a return is still not expected to happen.
The Packers have several key free agents to try and re-sign with little cap space to do it. Green Bay also made adding receivers an obvious goal in the 2025 NFL Draft.
That was likely in an effort to be ready to replace Doubs this offseason.
In the first and third rounds last year, the Packers added Matthew Golden and Savion Williams. Golden was third among the team’s receivers with 361 yards last year.
With Christian Watson back fully healthy, the Packers are equipped, at least on paper, to overcome the loss of Doubs.
So, pundits expect the Packers to have other priorities with re-signing players and free agent this offseason.
Projecting Doubs’s Value in 2026 NFL Free Agency
Packers fans can all but confirm Doubs is a long shot to return based on his free agency projections.
Spotrac predicted Doubs to be worth about $48 million on a new four-year contract this spring. That would pay the receiver roughly $12 million as an average annual salary.
According to Spotrac, the Packers are actually set to enter free agency over the salary cap. They will have to restructure deals or cut players to get under the cap.
The Packers sit at No. 22 in cap space at about $4.3 million over the cap as of February 26. That’s not the sign of a team ready to ink a player such as Doubs to a new deal.
Doubs began his career with the Packers as the No. 132 overall pick in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. He posted at least 425 receiving yards during each of his four seasons in Green Bay. But he also never exceeded 725 yards.
In 59 games overall, Doubs had 202 catches for 2,424 receiving yards and 21 touchdowns over his first four seasons.
