Packers Trade Pitch Nets 5-Time All-Pro WR as New No. 1 Option

The Green Bay Packers stumbled down the stretch in Week 3 to their first loss of the season, but there remains little to dislike about the roster — save for the lack of a true first option in the wide receiver group.

Green Bay drafted Matthew Golden in the first round with the hope that he will become that player, though that hasn’t yet materialized through the first three games of his NFL career.

Meanwhile, Jayden Reed underwent surgeries on his shoulder and foot eight days ago and is “going to miss a lot of time,” per Matt LaFleur, though the Packers head coach added that he “would expect [Reed] back at some point this season.” Also out is vertical threat Christian Watson, who has yet to play in 2025 as he continues rehabilitating an ACL tear he suffered in January.

The Packers were able to muster just 10 points against the Cleveland Browns last Sunday, and besides some depth to bolster an injured offensive line, the biggest roster deficiency appears to be a true No. 1 threat on the edge for quarterback Jordan Love in the pass game.

Evan Massey of Newsweek authored a trade proposal on Monday, September 22, suggesting the Packers pursue a deal for five-time All-Pro wideout Tyreek Hill of the 0-3 Miami Dolphins.

Tyreek Hill Might Cost Packers Day-2 Draft Asset in Trade

Massey’s pitch included a Day-2 draft asset for Hill, which equates to either a second- or third-round selection.

“Hill would instantly become the best wide receiver Green Bay has had in years. He would give Love a weapon that could be utilized down the field or in the short game. Against the Browns, the Packers simply couldn’t make plays through the air,” Massey wrote. “Making a move for Hill would not come cheap. Green Bay doesn’t have a lot of draft capital to play with, but a second or third-round pick for Hill would be worth it.”

There is also the question of salary to consider, as Hill is currently playing in the second season of a three-year deal worth $90 million total.

Furthermore, Hill is 31 years old and and several pundits around the league said he appeared to have lost a step in 2024, which was the first time in Hill’s now 10-year career that he failed to earn either Pro-Bowl or All-Pro honors as either a kick returner or wide receiver. He finished last season with 81 catches for 959 yards and six TDs after leading the league in receiving yards (1,799) and TD receptions (13) in 2023.

Trading for Tyreek Hill Represents Complicated Risk for Packers

Miami is reeling with long-term questions both under center and at the head coaching position. As such, Dan Graziano of ESPN recently named the Dolphins as one of the teams most likely to “subtract” ahead of the trade deadline, specifically pointing to Hill as a top candidate to switch teams.

“Hill was openly dissatisfied when the 2024 season ended, and while the team did not move on from him, he and quarterback Tua Tagovailoa talked in training camp about the fact that the relationship between Hill and the team was in need of repair,” Graziano wrote on September 19. “A complicating factor is that Hill could potentially face league discipline in the form of a suspension if the NFL investigates the recent accusations of domestic violence his ex-wife has made and finds him in violation of the personal conduct policy.”

There is a multifaceted messiness to any potential trade for Hill, with which Green Bay may not want to involve itself. That said, the decisions about letting go a meaningful draft pick, taking on a major salary for an aging player and dealing with potential off-field issues that, if proven true, are ugly in nature may all come down to a simple, two-part question: are the Packers on the cusp of true Super Bowl contention, and can Hill carry them across that particular finish line?

Even despite the late-game gaffes that led to a loss in Cleveland, the answer to the first portion of that question is probably yes. The answer to the second portion is less clear, and the possible moral ramifications could also prove an issue for Green Bay.
