This is the end for former Houston Texans running back Nick Chubb in the NFL.
Chubb spent one season with the Texans, looking to restart his career after injuries derailed him with the Cleveland Browns.
Chubb was supposed to be the Texans’ backup and an insurance policy for Joe Mixon, but ended up as the latter and the starter for multiple weeks during the 2025 season. Now, Chubb has decided to join the ranks of former NFL players.
Nick Chubb Makes Texans Final NFL Team
Chubb, who turns 31 in December, took to social media to announce his decision, retiring from the NFL after seven years with the Browns and one with the Texans.
Chubb began by saying it was a “day I’ve been avoiding for a while.”
“Twelve year old me could never imagine this day, and 30 year old me is wondering where all the time has gone,” Chubb posted on Instagram on August 21. “I’ve known for some time now, but I’m finally ready to share that I’m done playing football.
“I wanted to end my career on a healthy note, along with a winning season, and I was able to do that.”
Chubb continued, “At the beginning of this journey, I made many promises to myself. The #1 promise I made was that I would always stay true to who I am and never forget the things that made me, me,” adding, ”That promise meant always being the hardest working person, no matter where I was or what the circumstances were.
“And that started in Cedartown, Georgia.”
Chubb went on to call football a “huge blessing” that “opened so many doors and gave me opportunities I never could have imagined,” as well encountering “some amazing people” along the way.
Nick Chubb Walks Away at 30
Long before he was with the Texans, Chubb began his NFL career with the Browns as the 35th overall pick of the 2018 draft.
He rushed for 996 yards as a rookie, and then ripped off four consecutive seasons with over 1,000 yards on the ground. Injuries began to strike in college, but they continued in the NFL, and Chubb appeared in 2023 and 2024 combined.
Chubb’s 15 appearances and nine starts for the Texans in 2025 were his most since 2022.
This offseason, the Texans got a veritable younger version of Chubb in the physical David Montgomery.
Chubb rushed for 506 yards and 3 touchdowns on 122 carries for the Texans during the 2025 regular season, ceding starting duties to current RB2 Woody Marks. For his career, Chubb tallied 7,349 yards and 54 touchdowns on 1,462 carries
