The Houston Texans could add some serious length to their secondary in the form of veteran cornerback Tre Hawkins.
Hawkins, 26, is 6-foot-3.
“#Texans worked out former #Giants cornerback Tre Hawkins III today, per a league source,” KPRC 2’s Aaron Wilson reported on X on August 23. “Has recorded 45 career tackles, one interception, three passes defensed in 21 career games and four starts. Has also played for #Commanders.”
Texans Show Interest in Tre Hawkins

GettyTre Hawkins could be an intriguing addition to the Texans’ secondary.
Hawkins was a sixth-round pick, taken 209th overall in the 2023 draft. He began his career with the New York Giants, logging all of his four starts in 20 games with the franchise.
He appeared in one game for the Commanders during the 2025 regular season.
The Commanders waived Hawkins on August 5 with an injury designation. It is a process the Texans have undergone with several players, but means that he is free to sign with any franchise, though he would have had an extended period built into his agreement.
The Texans’ cornerback room is one of the team’s strengths, led by Pro Bowlers Derek Stingley Jr. and Kamari Lassiter.
However, the Texans have taken some injury hits with a couple of key reserves.
Both Collin Wright and Ja’Marcus Ingram have been banged up. The latter’s issue could be the impetus for the Texans’ interest in Hawks.
Tre Hawkins Might Not Be S.W.A.R.M

GettyTre Hawkins might lack some of the traits the Texans prefer.
To earn a spot on the Texans’ roster and play for head coach DeMeco Ryans, Hawkins must prove, among other things, that he is S.W.A.R.M.
That could be a problem for the young veteran, given his track record.
“Hawkins will be a project for teams interested in press corners with above-average athletic traits. He’s given up a lot of touchdowns, but those issues were often due to a lack of awareness and ball skills at the finish line,” NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein wrote before the draft in 2023.
“Showed off speed, suddenness and explosive leaping ability at his pro day, but those elements don’t show up on tape often enough due to a lack of instincts as a playmaker. There are some tools to tinker with, but Hawkins will need to make significant strides in his development to make a team.”
