Former Indianapolis Colts player Daniel Muir is facing another legal development as he continues to deal with an ongoing case in Indiana. The former NFL defensive lineman and pastor was already facing proceedings connected to the disappearance of his teenage son, and the latest development adds another layer to his situation.
Muir’s legal case has remained unresolved since events involving his family in 2024 drew the attention of authorities. With the legal process continuing, a new development involving federal authorities has now put the former Colts player back in the spotlight.
The latest development could affect the timeline surrounding his existing case. Meanwhile, the Colts have moved forward with their preseason preparations, with Indianapolis taking the field Saturday for another evaluation opportunity.
Daniel Muir Arrested on New Federal Firearm Charges
Former Indianapolis Colts player Daniel Muir was arrested in Pulaski County on August 20 after federal prosecutors filed two firearm-related charges against him.
Muir is accused of making a false statement to a licensed firearms dealer and making a false or fictitious statement while completing Form 4473, the federal document used during the purchase of a firearm.
The charges were filed on May 22 but remained sealed until Muir’s arrest. The public federal court record did not provide further details on what led to the charges, and a federal court date had not been announced at the time of the reports provided.
Form 4473 is part of the federal firearm-purchase process. It collects information used for the required background check and helps determine whether a buyer can legally receive a firearm.
The federal allegations are separate from Muir’s existing Indiana case, and the charges remain allegations unless and until proven in court.
The timing is significant because Muir was already preparing for legal proceedings in Indiana related to his teenage son’s disappearance and alleged abuse. He faces charges including obstruction of justice, domestic battery and battery resulting in serious bodily injury in Cass County.
Muir’s Indiana trial has been rescheduled for September 28, 2026. His wife, Kristin, is also facing an obstruction-of-justice charge in the same case, and her trial has been moved to the same date.
Muir spent five seasons with the Colts from 2008 through 2012. He played 56 games during his NFL career and finished with 128 total tackles, 99 solo tackles and 29 assists. He also recorded 1.5 sacks and seven tackles for loss.
While Muir’s legal situation continues to unfold off the football field, his former team is facing a different kind of pressure as the Colts take part in their second preseason game.
Riley Leonard Gets Another Chance to Impress Colts Against Falcons
Away from Muir’s legal situation, the Indianapolis Colts remain focused on football as preseason competition continues. One of the team’s biggest training camp battles is the contest for the backup quarterback job behind Daniel Jones.
Anthony Richardson Sr. and rookie Riley Leonard have split second-team repetitions throughout the opening weeks of camp, and head coach Shane Steichen said consistency will determine which quarterback earns the role.
“The guy that’s going to be most consistent is going to win that job,” Steichen said. “Those guys are battling. It’s back and forth right now. Obviously we will grade the tape, go through it and get better every day.”
Neither quarterback has created a clear separation during training camp, making the preseason especially important for both players. With Jones being held out of the Colts’ first two preseason games, Leonard received the starting opportunity against the Atlanta Falcons after Richardson opened the exhibition schedule against New England.
Leonard helped Indianapolis produce an early scoring drive against Atlanta, leading the offense into field-goal range before Spencer Shrader converted from 53 yards. The rookie’s performance continues to factor into the coaching staff’s evaluation of the quarterback depth chart.
The Colts entered the matchup against the Falcons after opening the preseason with a 13-13 tie against the New England Patriots. Every remaining preseason snap carries added importance as Steichen and his staff decide which quarterback can provide the most dependable option behind Jones heading into the regular season.
While Daniel Muir’s attention now shifts toward separate proceedings in federal and Indiana courts, Indianapolis continues preparing for the 2026 campaign. The franchise’s immediate focus remains on evaluating its roster and determining which young players can earn meaningful roles before the preseason concludes.
