The Indianapolis Colts continue to make changes to their roster as the preseason progresses. With another preseason game approaching, the team has limited time to evaluate players before final roster decisions become more difficult.
Indianapolis has already dealt with injuries and several changes at the bottom of the roster. Those moves have created opportunities for new players while forcing the Colts to reassess their depth at multiple positions.
The latest transaction came on Friday, as Indianapolis adjusted its roster before its second preseason game. The move gives one player a fresh opportunity while ending the Colts’ short-term evaluation of an undrafted defensive back.
Colts Bring In JJ Galbreath as New Opportunity Emerges
The Colts signed tight end JJ Galbreath ahead of their second preseason game and waived cornerback Jai’Onte McMillan as the corresponding move.
Galbreath went undrafted out of South Dakota in 2025. He spent last season on the Pittsburgh Steelers‘ practice squad but did not appear in a regular-season game. The move to Indianapolis now gives him another chance to continue his NFL career.
The tight end showed useful production during his final two college seasons. Galbreath was targeted 108 times and caught 66 passes, averaging nearly 15 yards per reception. He also recorded nine touchdowns during that span.
His ability as a receiver was not his only strength. 56% of Galbreath’s career snaps came as a blocker. He also has experience lining up in the slot, giving him some flexibility within the offense.
Galbreath’s athletic testing also stood out during his time with Pittsburgh. He recorded a 4.67-second 40-yard dash, a 38-inch vertical jump, and a 10-foot-3 broad jump. He also posted a 4.20 short shuttle and a 6.02-second three-cone drill.
The Steelers released Galbreath about two weeks ago after adding tight end Lance Mason and wide receiver Colton Dowell. Galbreath was described as more of a receiving tight end who had attempted to add weight to improve his in-line blocking.
His arrival in Indianapolis comes with a chance to compete for a depth or practice-squad role. With preseason opportunities becoming increasingly valuable, Galbreath will have to make an impression quickly.
Galbreath’s arrival also addresses a more immediate issue for Indianapolis, as the Colts have recently lost a developmental tight end and needed another body at the position.
Colts Address Tight-End Depth After Carson Towt Injury
The Colts needed additional tight-end depth after Carson Towt was placed on injured reserve earlier in the week. Indianapolis signed Towt as an undrafted free agent in March after his college basketball career.
Towt played at Notre Dame and Northern Arizona, starting 151 of 154 career games. He averaged 9.0 points and 8.8 rebounds per game while finishing his college career with 1,383 points and 1,357 rebounds.
His transition to football made him an unusual developmental prospect for the Colts. However, his move to injured reserve removed another option from the tight-end group during an important part of the preseason.
Indianapolis still has established players at the position, including Tyler Warren, Mo Alie-Cox, Drew Ogletree and Will Mallory. Warren led the Colts with 112 targets as a rookie, while the team has also viewed its tight-end group as an important part of its passing attack.
That depth means Galbreath will not be expected to take on a major role immediately. Instead, his signing gives Indianapolis another healthy player to evaluate while the team works through its preseason roster decisions.
The corresponding move also ended McMillan’s time with the Colts. The undrafted cornerback from Minnesota joined Indianapolis on June 1 and was viewed as a potential practice-squad candidate during the offseason.
McMillan played 561 defensive snaps over his final two college seasons. In 2025, he allowed 17 completions on 25 targets and surrendered 14.4 yards per catch, while recording one pass breakup.
With Sauce Gardner, Charvarius Ward and Justin Walley already accounting for key cornerback spots, McMillan faced competition for a place among the remaining defensive backs.
The Colts’ latest move, therefore, serves two purposes: adding another tight end after an injury and opening a roster spot by moving on from an undrafted cornerback. Galbreath now gets the opportunity to make his case before Indianapolis makes its next round of roster decisions.
