Entering the 2026 NFL Draft, the Indianapolis Colts had a glaring need at the linebacker position. The team decided to move on from Zaire Franklin in a trade with the Green Bay Packers and look for a younger option to anchor their defense. They then selected CJ Allen out of Georgia with the 53rd overall selection to slot into the “Mike” linebacker role. While Allen is naturally getting most of the coverage, being the Colts’ first pick in the draft, they also selected another linebacker in the fourth round.
Indy snagged Oregon Ducks linebacker Bryce Boettcher with the 135th overall pick. Boettcher was a two-sport athlete at Oregon, playing both football and baseball. Boettcher actually committed to baseball, but then walked on the football team in 2022. Despite getting drafted by the Houston Astros in 2024, Boettcher decided to remain at Oregon for football and led the team in tackles during 2024 and 2025.
In his rookie minicamp press conference, Boettcher discussed his decision to opt for the pigskin over the horsehide.
“It’s nice to have options, but football’s my passion”, Boettcher stated. Can’t hit anyone on the baseball field…so the game of football, I definitely love more. I love the team aspect and the intensity of it. Not to say that I don’t love baseball, you know there’s some really fun aspects of that game as well. But you know, it’s been my favorite sport since I was little, so you know it wasn’t too hard of a decision.”
Bryce Boettcher Brings Intensity And Physicality To Colts Defense

GettyOregon Ducks linebacker Bryce Boettcher recorded 136 total tackles, 5.5 tackles-for-loss, a sack, and an interception during the 2025 season.
Boettcher’s emphasis on intensity appears to be one of his most defining traits. He previously went viral for getting in a scuffle with his own teammate at the Senior Bowl after going a little too hard in a drill.
Among the other traits that make Boettcher different, he noted his mentality as key to his success.
“That’s my edge as a player. Obviously, I’m athletic, and I have some traits. But I’m not special in that regard. What makes me special is my mentality and physicality. You know the willingness to do things that other people probably won’t…I carry a chip above my shoulder.”
Boettcher’s belief in himself is palpable. When discussing his own outlook for his career, the rookie made a bold statement.
“I think I’m going to be a Hall of Famer. You know, 20 years in football, that’s my mentality, and that’s what it always has been.”
Boettcher Is Excited To Play Alongside CJ Allen

GettyGeorgia Bulldogs linebacker CJ Allen recorded 88 total tackles, 8 tackles-for-loss, 3.5 sacks, and 2 forced fumbles in 2025.
Boettcher is looking to begin his path to a legendary career in his rookie year. When asked about his early impressions and thoughts of playing next to CJ Allen, Boettcher stated, “I’m excited man. I met him at the combine. Talked for a little bit, but really got to meet him the last couple of days. Good dude. A little quiet, but you know, works the right way, which is exciting. Obviously, a great player, so I’m excited that we can push each other and compete with one another.”
