Indianapolis Colts’ Rookie Already “Operates as a Veteran”

The Indianapolis Colts continued training camp on Friday as the 2025 NFL season is still in its infancy. And, while there haven’t been many practices with the pads on so far, rookie tight end Tyler Warren is already drawing praise from veteran coaches and teammates.

Good news for the Colts, apparently Warren is good at catching a football.

“Looking at him for the draft, something we thought was a real strength to his was his hands, his ability to focus, concentrate and make those tough catches,” Colts offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter said. “He’s a very uniquely talented, uniquely skilled young man, and that’s something that he’s done really, really well.”

Of course Cooter will be excited. He’s trying to fix an offense that was a nightmare at times last year. The wide receivers are above average, but no one guy really puts fear into opposing defensive coordinators. Jonathan Taylor is a former All Pro running back and had a very good season last year, but he’s just one guy and can’t do it alone. In short, they are going to need Warren.

The first-round draft pick out of Penn State is excited about growing in the offense and feels more comfortable after offseason practices.

“I think it’s especially nice being through spring and having seen everything offensively and coming out here it’s not learning stuff every day,” Warren said. “It’s reminders and going back through it.”

Veteran teammate Camryn Bynum is already impressed with Tyler Warren

After four seasons with the Minnesota Vikings, safety Camryn Bynum signed a four-year, $60 million to come to Indy. He’s already impressed by Warren regardless of his lofty draft status.

“He’s one of those guys that if you didn’t tell me that he just drafted, I wouldn’t know,” Bynum said. “He operates as a veteran.”

Bynum is entering his fifth NFL season and he makes an interesting – and often overlooked – point about Warren. Everyone knows Warren can run and catch, but can he block?

“I can tell he can block just by his footwork,” Bynum said. “And just the intent that he has, but also his route running and yards after the catch is going to be elite. And I can tell that from him now. So it’s cool to be able to go against him in practice. It’s going to prepare us to go against any tight end in the game.”

I’m not sure how much more you’d want to hear from a veteran defender at this point.

Tyler Warren wants to be even better

The way people have been talking about Warren, you’d think he’s been in the NFL for eight years and made All Pro four times. Maybe they are getting ahead of themselves and maybe he’s just that good and it’s already obvious.

For what it’s worth, Warren just wants to keep his head down and be a better player and teammate.

“I think really it’s just when you’re a pro you have a little bit more time and more stuff I can do on my own to better myself,” Warren said. “So, that’s kind of what I’m working on and then learning from the vets like Mo (Alie-Cox) and Tree (Drew Ogletree) and all of them in the tight end room. So it’s been good, but I can always keep getting better at it.”

It might not be too early to have Warren on your radar in your upcoming fantasy football draft. He’s the kind of guy you can grab in the ninth round and win your league.
