Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver, Rashee Rice once again found himself in the middle of a scandal on Wednesday when he was hit with a lawsuit from ex-girlfriend and mother of his children, Dacoda Jones.

The former second round draft pick had been at the epicenter of said allegations the month prior by Jones, who took to Instagram to allege that Rice domestically abused her during their time together as a couple, including during the period when she was pregnant with their child.

Both the Chiefs and Rice’s lawyer released statements the very same day as the lawsuit surfaced, but so far there had been no comments made by the Chiefs’ front office or the coaching staff.

However on Friday, in speaking to the media, head coach Andy Reid broke said silence on the matter, but predictably was not able to give more than a generic answer when asked about the looming issue.

“I can’t comment on Rashee’s situation.” Reid said in response to questions concerning the lawsuit, per ESPN’s Nate Taylor.

Andy Reid Hushed on Rashee Rice Situation

Given that it is a legal matter, it is unsurprising that a head coach of an NFL franchise – particularly one as experienced, and indeed used to dealing with players getting into bad situations as Reid is – did not delve deeper into the matter or give his own personal thoughts and opinions.

Rice faces a civil lawsuit, rather than a criminal one – meaning he does not face jail time or other such punishments if convicted. But Jones in her lawsuit is seeking more than $1 million in damages, accusing him of assaults that included him having allegedly “grabbed, choked, strangled, pushed, thrown, scratched, hit, and headbutted” her.

Considering his history, which saw him face a six-week suspension to start this past season, the league may be incentivized to give him a more severe punishment the second time around – even if he ultimately settles with the plaintiff, Ms. Jones.

Will the Chiefs Pursue Wide Receivers This Offseason?

The Rice situation is highly fluid right now, and no one is quite sure how the team, league or the law will end up dealing with it in the coming weeks and months.

Kansas City will certainly not be happy with their top wideout once more getting into trouble, and there is no question that if he is suspended it will dramatically hurt his future contract prospects, with him currently set to hit free agency in 13 months time in March 2027.

As for reinforcements at the position, the Chiefs seem to be very much in the mix to re-sign Tyreek Hill – who just got cut from the Dolphins earlier this week.

But other big-ticket free agents in their prime like the Indianapolis ColtsAlec Pierce, who has been projected to receive over $20 million average annual value on a multi-year deal, will probably out of the team’s price range as they look to get out from under a $14 million cap hole by the start of the league new year in March.

If the situation does not resolve in the near future, or gets worse for Rice, expect the Chiefs to heavily consider attacking the position early on in this year’s draft.
