The Kansas City Chiefs are coming off the franchise’s toughest season in recent memory, with Andy Reid‘s squad limping through the 2025 campaign to finish with a disappointing record of 6-11 while also seeing superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes go down with a torn ACL, jeopardizing his status for the 2026 NFL season.
Along with all that transpired during this season, the Chiefs and offensive coordinator Matt Nagy, who held the position for the past three years, mutually agreed to part ways, opening up a key role on Reid’s coaching staff moving forward.

As Nagy looks for work around the league, whether as a head coach or offensive coordinator, Reid has shown his support by advocating for his former Chiefs colleague.
During a virtual press conference on Monday, Reid said he believes Nagy deserves another shot as an NFL head coach.
“Matt and I have a great relationship,” Reid said of Nagy. “Before the season even started here, I knew that he wanted an opportunity to have his own show. He’s been a head coach. He was Coach of the Year. All the things I’ve said about him, I still feel [that way] about him.
“He deserves to have a head coaching job. If not, it gives him an opportunity to go out and do his thing. I mean, somebody is missing a gem here. That’s how I feel. I would love to see him get picked up and going. At the same time, we got back a gem [in Bieniemy]. It has a chance to be a win-win here when everything is said and done.”
Following the Bills‘ promotion of offensive coordinator Joe Brady to head coach on Tuesday, replacing the recently fired Sean McDermott, there are only three head coaching vacancies left in the league: the Las Vegas Raiders, Arizona Cardinals and Cleveland Browns.
It remains to be seen whether Nagy will get an opportunity to be a head coach again during this cycle.
Andy Reid Opens Up About Bringing Back Eric Bieniemy

With Nagy pursuing opportunities to be a head coach in the NFL once again, the Chiefs decided to bring back a familiar face by hiring Eric Bieniemy to be the team’s new offensive coordinator.
Reid opened up about bringing back Bieniemy after his time as running backs coach for the Chicago Bears under Ben Johnson during the 2025 NFL season.
“I think we all know the energy Eric brings and what he gives to a football team,” Reid said. “He’s coming off a heck of a season with the Chicago Bears, my hat goes off to the Bears and the great job they did there.”
Reid knows what Bieniemy brings to the table and how that impacts Mahomes moving forward.
“E.B. will be very direct with [Mahomes], like he does with everybody,” Reid said, transcription via ESPN. “[Mahomes] knows it’s coming from a place of knowledge. Patrick loved Nagy, and he also loves E.B.
“I know both guys and know them well. I’ve worked with them and won championships with them. Here’s Nagy in a position where he’s got an opportunity here potentially to move on and great things happen for [him] and his family. On one side of that, I’m pushing that, saying, ‘Let’s go, man! Do your thing!’ On the other side, I’ve got to sit there and go, ‘Who’s going to replace this guy that just came off of winning a couple championships and going to three Super Bowls.'”
It’ll be interesting to see how things shake out in Kansas City, as a lot of things need to be addressed, with Travis Kelce‘s decision on whether he’ll retire looming as well as the injury timetable for Mahomes and what moves the team wants to make during the NFL offseason to bounce back in 2026.
