Retirement rumors continue to follow Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce after the completion of his 13th NFL season. While Kelce has not announced a decision about returning, former teammate and Chiefs legend Jamaal Charles believes the star should walk away now — and transition into broadcasting.
Charles shared his advice in a new interview, saying Kelce has already accomplished everything possible on the field and would have nothing left to prove if he chooses retirement.
Jamaal Charles Urges Travis Kelce to Retire After 13th Season
Retired All-Pro running back Charles spoke with Chiefs Wire’s Ed Easton Jr. while discussing his role as an NFL Alumni ambassador for the “GEAR UP Against Cancer” campaign, which supports the fight against lung cancer in partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Division of Cancer Prevention and Control. During the interview, Charles also addressed the ongoing retirement buzz surrounding Kelce.
“I say you need to retire. Yeah, nothing to prove, no more. Man, (You’re) number one tight end, sell his broadcast for a billion dollars,” Charles said. “Man, go enjoy your life — you won a couple of Super Bowls. I mean, that’s more than anybody wishes can win—Pro Bowls, All-Pro tight end. You’re a Hall of Fame tight end.”
Charles said Kelce’s résumé speaks for itself, adding that the tight end already has the accomplishments other veterans spend their entire careers chasing.
“There are a lot of ‘Tony Gonzalezes’ out there, almost the same age, and trying to get a Super Bowl ring, you already got it,” Charles said.
He also suggested Kelce has shown signs of slowing down physically, though he maintained that Kelce can still play if he wants to.
“If your body doesn’t feel it, I didn’t feel like Travis was playing at a high level like he used to, just by knowing Travis and seeing the way he moved, but he still has it,” Charles said.
Charles continued by framing the decision as both practical and personal, emphasizing that Kelce is already set financially and could thrive in another lane.
“Ain’t nothing to prove to me. I already know you good. We already know you good. You’re set for life,” Charles said. “I mean, go, kick up your feet and be on somebody broadcast or ESPN, and we’ll definitely tune in to you.”
Travis Kelce Addresses Retirement on ‘New Heights’
Kelce discussed his future directly on the January 7 episode of the podcast “New Heights,” which he hosts with his brother Jason Kelce. He said he begins every offseason by resting first, then figuring out what comes next.
“Every season ends for me, I just put my feet up, and I just be a human,” Kelce said. “Just being a regular human for a couple weeks, maybe a month or so, just trying to figure out what I’m going to do next in terms of my future in football.”
Kelce also said he has already spoken with members of the organization as the season ended.
“I’ve talked to a few people in the facility already, having the exit meetings and everything, and they know where I stand at least right now,” he said.
While Kelce acknowledged the uncertainty, he made it clear that the decision will come down to whether his body can recover enough for another full season.
“There’s a lot of love for the game that’s still there and I don’t think I’ll ever lose that,” Kelce said. “It’s a tough thing to navigate, but at the same time, if my body can heal up and rest up, and I can feel confident that I can go out there and give it another 18, 20, 21-week run, I think I would do it in a heartbeat.”
Kelce said he is focused on finding clarity with time and recovery.
“I think right now, it’s just finding that answer and seeing how the body feels after this game and kinda when it all settles down,” he said.
Kelce Has Talked to Networks About Life After Football for ‘Years’
Charles’ belief that Kelce could cash in as a broadcaster is also supported by recent reporting about Kelce’s off-field opportunities. A source told People that Kelce has been in discussions with major networks and streaming services for years, and that those conversations are separate from whether he plays next season.
“Travis has been in discussions with every major streaming service, including Netflix, and every major network for the past several years,” the source said. “And that is not affecting his decision whether or not he is returning to football because those discussions have been happening for the past several years.”
The source added that Kelce’s media talks have been ongoing long before this latest round of retirement speculation, reinforcing the idea that the 11-time Pro Bowler would have immediate options if he decides to step away from the field.
