The Kansas City Chiefs’ focus has turned to the offseason doings, given the lack of playoff action to be had this winter for the organization.

A key question to be had in and around the organization concerns the future of the coaching staff in 2026 and beyond. Andy Reid jokingly stated last month that he was planning to return to the Chiefs, “If they’ll have me.” But a more serious potential departure comes from the organization’s two coordinator spots.

Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo has been getting the usual lukewarm buzz for a head coaching role. And despite a very poor offensive showing in 2025, offensive coordinator Matt Nagy has been touted as a future head coaching candidate by multiple NFL insiders and sporting media outlets.

Nagy already has interviews scheduled with the Arizona Cardinals, Tennessee Titans and Las Vegas Raiders, and is currently the betting favorite to become the Titans’ next head coach.

Although Nagy certainly has some baggage, including a very mixed four-year spell as HC of the Chicago Bears, prominent Chiefs reporter, Nate Taylor of The Athletic, believes that the current Kansas City OC, who is out of contract at the end of the season, will not return to the team in 2026.

Matt Nagy Expected Not to Return to Kansas City

Speaking on 96.5 The Fan, Taylor asserted that he thinks the Chiefs will have a different offensive coordinator for this coming season.

“It will change,” Taylor said of the offensive coordinator role in Kansas City. “I don’t believe Matt Nagy is going to be back. We all know he doesn’t have a contract; he is, in essence, a free agent…Something would have to go very wild for Matt Nagy to come back.”

Taylor also mentioned that Andy Reid has been supportive of Nagy getting another opportunity to be a head coach in the NFL – presumably an implication that the three-time Super Bowl-winning head coach will give his blessing if his OC is signed by another team.

Would The Chiefs Want Nagy To Return?

Taylor’s wording implies that even if he does not get another job, Nagy might not be chosen by the organization to continue in his current position moving forward.

From a statistical point of view, the Chiefs’ offense has seriously declined since Nagy took over the coordinator position back in 2023.

Adam Levitan of Establish The Run posted the Chiefs’ yards per play ranking in the NFL over the past 8 years – i.e. since Patrick Mahomes took over at quarterback – and the results certainly do not shine a kind light upon his three-year tenure.

Kansas City also finished 20th this year in total offense and 25th in rushing offense under Nagy.

Nagy clearly has some capabilities, shown by his excellent first season in Chicago when the team went 12-4 and won the NFC North – the last time the organization managed that feat since Ben Johnson did the same thing in his rookie year this past season.

But after what has been essentially a disastrous season, the Chiefs do need change – particularly on offense. And it could be that Nagy simply does not fall into the team’s plans any longer.
