The Kansas City Chiefs will likely be in search of an offensive coordinator, and now, it may be impacted by John Harbaugh and the Ravens.

The Kansas City Chiefs are now in the offseason following their final game of the 2025-26 season on Sunday, January 4, against the Las Vegas Raiders. Consider the franchise didn’t make it to the playoffs, of course, there will be changes on the staff and squad heading into the new season.

One of those changes, not by choice, is looking to be Kanas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy landing a head coaching gig elsewhere. Nagy’s contract is expiring, and he’s openly interviewing for head coaching jobs, especially with the Tennessee Titans. He has certainly earned his lead play-calling stripes, so even if he doesn’t get a head coaching job elsewhere during this cycle, he’ll likely be moving on from the Chiefs.

On Tuesday, Jan. 6, the Baltimore Ravens announced the news that they were letting go of head coach John Harbaugh after 18 seasons. The news shook the NFL world, and now, all the talk in the league is about where Harbaugh will land. He won’t be on the beach for long. So, what does this have to do with the Kansas City Chiefs?

What Jim Harbaugh Has to Do With the Kansas City Chiefs

No, Harbaugh isn’t going to replace Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, and he’s not going to be the new offensive coordinator with Kansas City. But, the Harbaugh news has something to do with the team’s staffing search and a hopeful candidate to replace Nagy.

One candidate who seemed purpose-made for the Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator opening, if Nagy were to leave, was Kliff Kingsbury, who was fired as offensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders on Tuesday, January 6. Kingsbury was quarterback Patrick Mahomes‘ former head coach at Texas Tech, so the move would have made for a neat reunion.

But, not so fast. Dianna Russini of The Athletic has now reported that “many believe” that Kingsbury would be an “ideal” fit for the head coach role with the Ravens.

“Amid recent leaguewide buzz about Kliff Kingsbury’s future, many believe Baltimore, paired with Lamar Jackson, would be an ideal landing spot for the now former Commanders offensive coordinator,” she said on Tuesday, following the Harbaugh news surfacing. “That will be a name to watch.”

Baltimore Ravens Head Coach Job > Kansas City Chiefs Offensive Coordinator Job

So, Kingsbury would obviously take the chance to be the head coach of the Ravens and work with Lamar Jackson over being the offensive coordinator for the Chiefs, even though the latter would have meant a reunion with Mahomes.

The Chiefs already lost assistant defensive line coach Alex Whittingham this offseason to his father, Michigan Wolverines football head coach Kyle Whittingham, who has hired Alex to be a linebackers coach on his coaching staff.

Whittingham had been with the Kansas City Chiefs since 2018. He started his time there as a defensive quality control coach in 2019 and was promoted to a defensive assistant in 2024. Finally, he was promoted to assistant defensive line coach before the 2025 season.

But, this is just one of many changes down the line. The Chiefs will look quite new for the 2025-26 season, and it’s just the change they need.
