Taylor Swift received a surprise family update ahead of her upcoming wedding to Travis Kelce, as a new report revealed fresh details about the pop superstar’s ancestry that quickly drew attention online. The new revelation, unearthed by Italian genealogists and published on Saturday, shed new light on the immigrant success story in Swift’s family background, as she prepares for her high-profile wedding to Kelce.
Kelce, the Kansas City Chiefs future Hall of Fame tight end, recently discovered that he is descended from Croatian, Czech and Polish immigrants. The revelation’s timing — arriving as Swift and Kelce’s wedding draws closer — immediately sparked new intrigue among fans watching for every signal about the couple’s next move.
On Saturday, the Museo del Cognome — or Family History Museum — in Padula, Salerno, Italy, published a 164-year-old birth certificate of a man named Carmine Antonio Baldi. And who was Baldi?
Carmine Antonio Baldi did not know it when he emigrated from the small Italian town of Castelnuovo Cilento to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, that his great-great granddaughter would become the world’s most successful female pop music star, and one of the most famous women in the world — Taylor Swift.
What Was Taylor Swift’s Great-Great-Grandfather’s Story?
The Baldi birth certificate was unearthed from local archives by researchers at the museum, which is an institution dedicated to genealogical exhibits, Baldi’s passport photo had earlier been found, but the birth certificate appears to be the first official confirmation of Swift’s family origins.
Baldi’s daughter Louise married Charles Gwynn Douglas. Their daughter, Rose Baldi Douglas married a man named Archie Dean Swift Jr. and they had a son, Scott Kingsley Swift who became a wealthy financial advisor and the father of a musically-inclined daughter, Taylor Alison Swift, according to an account by the genealogical site FindMyPast.
But what about Carmine “Charles” Baldi, the first in Swift’s family line to emigrate from Italy to the United States?
“Charles was born in Castelnuovo, Cilento, Italy in 1862. His father was Vito Baldi,” FindMyPast recounted. “Charles sailed from Naples to the United States in 1876 or 1877 and became a real estate broker in Philadelphia. An earlier passport application from 1920 gave his height as 5-feet-9-inches, his eyes as brown, and his complexion as dark and clear.”
According to an account by the Italian news outlet TGCom24, Carmine Baldi arrived in Philadelphia and “started out doing simple jobs, such as selling lemons.
The new immigrant then “managed to build a solid entrepreneurial career over time. With his family, he founded a bank in 1903, and then in 1906 he launched the Italian-language newspaper L’Opinione. becoming a point of reference for the Italian-American community.”
Swift’s Irish Roots Are Better-Known
When it comes to Taylor Swift’s ancestry, her Irish heritage has been better-publicized than her Italian roots.
“Two of Taylor Swift’s paternal great-great-great-grandparents, Susan Davis, a dressmaker and Francis Gwynn, a weaver, emigrated from Derry, in the north of Ireland, to the United States in 1836,” according to a report by the Irish Heritage News in June, 2024. “This was roughly a decade before the Great Irish Famine, during a time marked by substantial emigration from Ireland to America as people sought out better opportunities and living conditions, as well as adventure.”
With the new discoveries, as well as the revelations about Kelce’s family tree, it has now become clear that not only with the Swift-Kelce wedding be major pop culture event, but it will also serve as a celebration of immigrant success in the United States. With new details continuing to emerge around Swift and Kelce’s relationship, fans are closely watching for what could come next — from additional family revelations to long-awaited updates on the couple’s wedding plans.
