The Kansas City Chiefs could be in need of help at receiver this offseason, after current WR1 Rashee Rice was slapped with a lawsuit accusing him of committing a range of physical abuses towards his partner at the time and mother of his children.
‘Out with the old, in with the new’ is the general motto in the NFL, as it is in life, when it comes to March with both spring time and free agency approaching, but perhaps the Chiefs’ best option could come in turning back to one of their old faces, Tyreek Hill.
The Chiefs have been the favorite to land the five-time All-Pro wide receiver since he was released by the Miami Dolphins on Monday, and the latest social media post from Hill has only increased speculation that he may well return to his former place of employment.
Tyreek Hill Arrives in Kansas City After Release
Posting on his snapchat on the morning of February 18, Hill posted a picture of himself geo-tagged in Kansas City, alongside the time – 11.42 am.
Hill also changed his profile picture on his snapchat to one with him wearing a Chiefs uniform from the period prior to his trade from the Midwest to South Florida back in March 2022.
The former Chiefs receiver famously said that he believed Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was more accurate than three-time Super Bowl champion and two-time MVP Patrick Mahomes back when he was first moved to Miami.
But after four years it seems like those comments would be water under the bridge if head coach Andy Reid can convince Cheetah to return to Missouri.
Should the Chiefs Look to Bring Back Hill?
Kansas City are the current favorites to land Hill, according to Polymarket and Kalshi, but there are still questions as to whether it would be a wise move for Reid and general manager Brett Veach to pull the trigger on this particular acquisition.
The Chiefs just created an additional $20 million in cap space after restructuring Mahomes’ contract, but the team is still over $14 million in the red with less than a month to go until the start of free agency.
It is likely that right tackle Jawaan Taylor will be a cap casualty for the team, which will grant KC another $20 million in cap room. But it’s likely that a deal for Hill – even if it is just a one year contract – will exceed the $6 million left in cap space.
Although it would be possible for Kansas City to make further contract restructures and/or release other players to generate more room for free agent signings.
The Rashee Rice lawsuit situation should be a legitimate factor in the Chiefs’ decision making, especially considering that Rice already served a six-game suspension from the NFL last season – perhaps prompting the league to be extra harsh on the former second round pick this time round.
And if Rice is unavailable for some of or much of the 2026 season, having a player like Hill who is familiar with the organization, Mahomes and returning offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy could be a huge plus to help reverse the Chiefs’ struggles on offense last year.
