For long periods of the offseason, the Kansas City Chiefs were considered the front-runners to re-sign All-Pro wide receiver Tyreek Hill, after the 32-year old was released by the Miami Dolphins back in February, having missed all but four games of the NFL season due to an ACL tear during Week 4’s win over the New York Jets.

The pairing made sense; head coach Andy Reid is looking for a spark on offense after a multi-year dip in offensive production, particularly during the regular season, and who better to give it to them than quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ one-time favorite deep threat, who helped the team win Super Bowl LIV back in February 2020.

However, any chatter that a Tyreek Hill signing might be imminent has been somewhat put to bed by Hill’s representative, super-agent Drew Rosenhaus, who said during an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show that he does not expect the former Dolphin to sign with any NFL franchise prior to the start of the season.

“I don’t expect Tyreek Hill to sign before the season.” Rosenhaus said on McAfee’s show on Friday. “He sent me videos of him yesterday running hills yesterday and he looked great. And I said to him, “You look great”, and he said to me, “I still have some work to do, I’m not ready yet.”

I am not pressuring Tyreek, nor am I setting a timeline for him. I think that what I’ve said to Tyreek is, “Take your time. It’s not when you come back, it’s how you come back. We want you to come back when you feel your best. There’s no sense of urgency timing wise.”

I think this is a future Hall of Famer who still has a lot of good football left in him. This was a devastating injury, but everyone’s going to be so impressed when they see how well Tyreek has rehabbed. It is not hyperbole to predict that he will play this season. When I’m not sure, but I do think when he does sign he will be a coveted player; he will be the kind of guy who will impact the playoff race.”

Tyreek Hill Still Has Some Work to do Before Coming Back

Some people believed that Hill – like other players have done in the past – was waiting for team to be in need of a WR1 due to injury or a big-time trade either just preceding or during the regular season, and swoop in to get an inflated deal.

However it appears the actual reason is rooted; at least according to Rosenhaus; in the timeline of his recovery. Hill was on track for an 1100+ yard receiving season prior to his injury last September, and on the right team with the right quarterback there is little doubt that he can at the very least lend an 2021 postseason OBJ-type hand to willing contender.

Given Rosenhaus’ comments about the playoffs, Hill may not be ready to sign with any team – including KC – for the next couple of months at least. But when he is medically cleared, expect the Chiefs to be very much in the mix.
