The Kansas City Chiefs are set to make two selections during the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft.

That could change if they decide to trade up or down, but as of now they will pick ninth and 29th overall. The Chiefs not only need to fill several holes throughout their roster, but do so with players who will make an immediate impact.

The draft is an inexact science, meaning there is a level of risk with each prospect. The Chiefs usually strive to put aside what their positional needs are and take the best player available. The goal this year, especially with the No. 9 pick, will be achieve both of those goals.

While naming one draft prospect that each team should avoid, Alex Ballentine of Bleacher Report pointed out Tyson for the Chiefs due to a combination of Tyson’s injury history and Kansas City having so many other roster needs.

“The Chiefs haven’t picked in the top 10 of the draft since 2017. They took some guy named Patrick Mahomes. If they play things right and get things back on track, this will be the last time they pick in the top 10 for a long time. That’s why rolling the dice on Jordyn Tyson is not a risk worth taking for Kansas City at No. 9.Tyson is the ninth-ranked prospect on our big board and our top receiver by a narrot margin over Carnell Tate. But the injury risk has to be acknowledged. Tyson has a concerning history of injury that needs to be considered. He tore his ACL, MCL and PCL as a freshman at Colorado and only played in nine games last season as he dealt with a hamstring issue down the stretch of his final collegiate campaign. His skills will make him a tempting selection for a team that needs young playmakers to step up. However, needs at offensive tackle and edge-rusher should leave Kansas City with better, higher-floor selections.”

Last week, Tyson held a workout with scouts from several NFL teams present, and it went very well by most accounts. That may have solidified him as a top 10 pick, and could give Kansas City a shot to take him at nine.

Is Jordyn Tyson Worth a 1st-Round Pick for the Chiefs?

Tyson is arguably the most talented receiver in this year’s draft class, possessing a nice blend of size, speed, and route running ability.  Unfortunately, he also has a significant injury history. In 2022 while he tore his ACL, MCL, and PCL. In 2024, he fractured his clavicle, which required surgery.

Tyson dealt with injuries to both of his hamstrings in 2025, costing him three games and the ability to work out at the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine. Although he seems clear of all those ailments now, there are still important factors to consider. One is whether or not he is injury-prone, and another is if those injuries will take a toll on him for the long-term.

Chiefs general manager Brett Veach and his scouts will weigh those questions, along with input from coaches. They certainly have a future need at the wide receiver position with Rashee Rice entering the final year of his contract. In 2025 Tyson recorded 61 receptions for 711 yards and eight touchdowns in nine games played. The year before in 12 games played, he caught 75 passes for 1,101 yards and 10 touchdowns.
