Players for the Las Vegas Raiders are about to go through another head coaching change following the announcement that they’ve fired Pete Carroll. This will be the franchise’s fourth head coaching search in four years.
However, not every player has been around for all of those searches. Rookie running back Ashton Jeanty is now dealing with his first head coach firing. He’s just hoping the Raiders don’t screw it up this time.
“I don’t make those decisions,” Jeanty told reporters on Monday. “Obviously new head coach coming in, so hopefully they just bring in the right guy.”
There will likely be many reports in the coming weeks, months and years about what went wrong with Carroll’s tenure, but it might not be too complicated. Carroll seemed to play favoritism with certain players and didn’t always hold struggling veterans accountable, while rookies would get benched for mistakes.
Jeanty is hoping that the next head coach can bring a level of accountability that wasn’t there with the team this season.
“I think just holding guys accountable, especially when they need it, knowing your players well enough to just keep that standard up,” Jeanty said what he’s looking for in the next head coach.
Jeanty on What He Learned From Carroll
Carroll’s one season with the Raiders was an unmitigated disaster, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that he’s one of the most respected coaches in the NFL. He’s won championships at the college and NFL levels, which is something not many coaches have done.
While this Raiders season will be a weird blip on his resume, Jeanty did want to mention what he learned from Carroll during their lone season together.
“Bringing your best in the biggest of moments,” Jeanty said. “He was always talking about doing stuff right longer than the other team. I think what’s what it was about. Being better for longer than the other team.”
Though this is Jeanty’s first coaching change at the NFL level, he did have to deal with that at Boise State, and the team improved. He’s hoping a similar thing happens in Las Vegas.
“You gotta be ready to adapt for whoever is coming in the building,” Jeanty said. “Obviously, we changed (head coaches) at Boise State and got better, so hoping it’ll be the same thing.”
Tre Tucker Praises Carroll
When the Raiders hired Carroll, they were widely praised for the move. He was seen as a stabilizing force for a franchise that has been unstable for decades.
Unfortunately, the Raiders proved too difficult to fix for the 74-year-old coach. However, wide receiver Tre Tucker thinks the Raiders are in a better place now than they were when Carroll first took over.
“For us, we have a lot of young guys that are really good that I think will help us in the future,” Tucker told reporters. “Pete gave everything. Utmost respect for him. Very great guy. As a person, tremendous. For this organization, we have a lot of different views on things. A lot of young players we can build off of. We’ll see what we can do with it.”
