Directly after the Las Vegas Raiders‘ 30-29 Monday night loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, star wide receiver Davante Adams was seen shoving a worker to the ground on his way to the locker room. A day after the incident, TMZ reported that the worker went to the hospital with “non-life threatening” injuries. The man has also decided to go to the police.
According to Kansas City Municipal Court documents obtained by Heavy and KCTV5’s Shain Bergan, Adams is being charged with a city ordinance violation.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport has also confirmed the violation could carry “a fine of $250 to $1,000 or up to 180 days in jail or both.”
The star wide receiver and the Raiders have yet to respond to these charges. Adams’ court date is set for November 10, per the court documents.
Adams Could Face Discipline From the NFL
Adams does not only face legal ramifications for the incident. He may also be facing punishment from the NFL. According to ESPN’s Jeff Darlington, the league is reviewing the situation and is considering a possible fine or suspension.
As I said on NFL Live, the NFL continues to review Davante Adams’ postgame incident for potential discipline that could include fine or suspension, per sources.
Because Raiders have a bye, NFL is aware they don’t need to be as expeditious as normal with a decision. No timetable.
Adams has no prior incidents that have required punishment from the NFL. This would be the first major run-in he’s had with the league. That could be a factor when the league decides on a punishment.
Adams Has Apologized for Incident
As previously noted, Adams is not the type of player to stir controversy. He was immediately apologetic after the incident occurred.
“I want to apologize to the guy, there was some guy running off the field, and he ran, like jumped in front of me coming off the field and I bumped into him, kind of pushed him, and he ended up on the ground,” Adams said after the game. “So I wanted to say sorry to him for that because that was just frustration mixed with him literally just running in from of me. I shouldn’t have responded that way, but that’s how I initially responded. So, I want to apologize to him for that.”
Adams also took to Twitter to issue a second apology.
The apology clearly wasn’t enough as now Adams will have to deal with the legal system in the coming months. According to Pro Football Talk, the man that Adams shoved was a freelancer for ESPN who was there to cover Monday Night Football. The outlet has yet to directly address the situation.
The Raiders are heading into their bye week, which should give Adams some time to resolve this situation. The team is 1-4 and can’t afford to lose the wide receiver for an extended period of time. However, it’s out of the team’s hands.
Adams is letting his frustration show as he decided to leave a Green Bay Packers team that hasn’t lost more than four games in three straight seasons. It hasn’t been the best start for the wide receiver and this situation only makes things worse.
Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels continues to support the wide receiver.
“I support Davante wholeheartedly as a human being,” McDaniels said Tuesday. “As a person, he’s a great guy. I know that was an unfortunate situation. We obviously don’t want any of our guys to be doing anything like that. He knows that. He’s very well aware of that. But I know the person; I don’t think there was any intent behind it, on his part.
“But whatever [the NFL] asks of us, whatever they need from us, obviously we’ll comply. But we’re kind of in a wait-and-see [situation] at this point.”
