The Las Vegas Raiders remain in the middle of their head coaching search. Although other teams are beginning to announce their hires, the Silver and Black are still conducting interviews, understanding they need to get this hire right.
With Indiana Hoosiers QB Fernando Mendoza likely being the No. 1 pick, the Raiders have to consider a head coach who can develop their potential young signal-caller.
Among the names Las Vegas have spoken to, Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer focused on Denver Broncos offensive pass game coordinator and quarterbacks coach Davis Webb.
“Davis Webb to me might be the most interesting name though,” Breer said on the Jan. 22 edition of “The Rich Eisen Show.” “He’s incredibly well thought of. He hasn’t coached for very long is the problem, but he played in the league recently. He’s my understanding, like got a passing relationship with Tom Brady, but he’s got two offensive coordinator names that I know are on this list that have tight connections to Brady.
“One is Brian Daboll, who could wind up going to Tennessee as the coordinator, could go to Buffalo as the head coach, but Brian Daboll’s one name for Davis Webb. They were together both in New York and Buffalo when Davis was a player… so I think Davis Webb has a ton of head coach qualities.”
Raiders Could Make Sean McVay-Like Decision
Moreover, Breer wonders if the Raiders will go the route of the Los Angeles Rams, who hired Sean McVay despite not having a long coaching career. However, the NFL insider wonders whether Las Vegas decide to act now, understanding that next year or down the road, Webb will be a head coach.
“I think part of it is the same thing with the Rams,“ Breer added. “The Rams had with McVay, right? Like, which is like, I remember talking to the Rams front office people when they hired Sean, and the whole thing was, ‘Well, we can hire him now a year early, or we just won’t get him at all, because if he doesn’t get a job this year, he’s going to get one next year, and we’re not going to be looking for one next year,‘ right?
“I think with Davis, that’s part of the logic: Do we go in early on a guy, a year early with a guy, bring in an experienced offensive coordinator who can work with the quarterback, and just bet on this guy’s upside side? And so, I think Davis Webb has a shot in Vegas under that sort of setup.”
Raiders Unlikely to Go Land One Big-Name Coach
On Jan. 19, the Buffalo Bills decided to fire McDermott after another season that failed to end in a Super Bowl appearance. As a result, there’s another high-profile coach out on the market with a handful of head coach openings.
Nonetheless, NFL insider Tom Pelissero stated that McDermott doesn’t fit the mold of a leader in the Raiders rebuild, given his age.
“If we talk about where could Sean McDermott potentially land next, it doesn’t make a ton of sense for him to go into a total rebuild,“ Pelissero said on the Jan. 19 edition of “The Rich Eisen Show.”
“He’s 51 years old. He’s been there every year, been in the playoffs, every season here in recent years. I don’t really see him [saying], ‘I’m gonna go to Arizona, or I’m gonna go to Las Vegas.’ I think the teams to watch for Sean McDermott, potentially the Steelers, though that would be outside of their normal bucket in terms of who they look to hire.”
