The Las Vegas Raiders are 1-1 through two games, and while the offense hasn’t played very well, the defense has been a pleasant surprise. The group doesn’t have a lot of big names, but the team added a number of savvy veterans in the offseason.
One of the notable players the Raiders signed was Jamal Adams. Las Vegas decided to transition the former All-Pro defensive back to linebacker this offseason, and so far, it’s paying off. In two games, Adams has been the Raiders‘ highest-graded defender, according to Pro Football Focus.
Adams isn’t a starter yet, but he’s making the case to get more snaps. Defensive coordinator Patrick Graham had some high praise for Adams heading into Week 3.
“He’s a Blitzer. He’s disruptive as a force player in the run game,” Graham told reporters on Thursday.
Adams was once considered one of the premier defenders in the NFL, but has fallen on hard times in recent years due to injury. Head coach Pete Carroll knew the veteran well from their time in Seattle and wanted to give him a chance. So far, it’s paying off for the Raiders. He could see his role expand if he keeps playing at a high level.
Pete Carroll is Pleased With Jeremy Chinn
One of the reasons the Raiders could move Adams to linebacker is that they are set at safety right now. Jeremy Chinn was the most notable free agent signing the team made this offseason, and he’s impressing coaches so far. Carroll is very high on what he’s been doing through two games.
“I love what [Jeremy] Chinn’s doing. He gives us all kinds of flexibility. We do a lot of stuff with him. He’s got a lot of game. He can really run, and that’s to go along with being physical and all the rest,” Carroll said Wednesday.
“So, he made a big play right on the first drive of the game that got us off the field for a field goal. It was good stuff. I’m concerned about guys going back, on situations like this, that they get overhyped. It means more to them, and which it does, but he has to handle that really well. I’m sure he will.”
Jonah Laulu Starting to Emerge
A player who appears set for a breakout season is defensive tackle Jonah Laulu. He has 3.0 sacks in two games, which is tied for second-most in the NFL.
He’s always had a lot of physical gifts, but is finally starting to put things together. Carroll has been impressed with the young defensive tackle.
“He has just blossomed. He’s just blossomed. He had enough plays on film coming off of last year, like I probably said to you guys, that he caught my eye like a potential guy that might really be a factor, and so I was really excited about him in the offseason,” Carroll said.
“And he did everything right, and he’s played well. He’s done a nice job. He’s been very active, been really consistent with his play. So, he’s done nothing but positive things.”
