The Las Vegas Raiders are getting closer to the moment they can announce Klint Kubiak as their next head coach. Once that happens, he’ll start quickly putting together his coaching staff.
He’s likely to bring some coaches over from the Seattle Seahawks, but he’s going to need a lot of coaches to fill out the staff. Former Raiders quarterback and the franchise’s all-time leading passer, Derek Carr, has recently expressed interest in joining the coaching ranks.
He played under Kubiak when they were both with the New Orleans Saints in 2024. He had a message for the coach after the Raiders news and suggested that Kubiak give him a call.
“So Klint, if you did indeed accept this job, which you can’t until after the Super Bowl, congratulations, you know how I feel about you,” Carr said on the “Home Grown” podcast. “And what’d Chingy say, ‘I’m only one call away, man. I’ll come help the kid.'”
The “kid” he’s likely referring to is presumed No. 1 pick Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza. If Carr’s going to get a coaching job, the most logical spot for him is to be a quarterbacks coach. He could also just be brought in as an offensive assistant with an emphasis on working with the quarterbacks.
Carr Thinks Ashton Jeanty Will Thrive
A big reason that Carr wants to join Kubiak’s staff is that he thinks very highly of the coach. The Raiders have had the worst rushing offense in the NFL in back-to-back years.
Carr thinks Kubiak is going to change that immediately.
“I’ve been praying, man. I hope they get Klint,” Carr said. “Because schematically, offensively, it’s gonna be awesome. … (Ashton) Jeanty will be a happy man. Honestly, Jeanty could be a 1,800-yard back.”
Carr Gives More Insight Into Kubiak
Kubiak isn’t very lively when talking to the media. He seems to take himself very seriously.
Carr doesn’t think that’s a problem. He gave some insight into how the coach communicates.
“Klint is very stoic. The tone, I would say, the volume of his voice isn’t going to change. He’s right here, but it’s going to be very clear. We’re going to go out to practice, and when we come back in, he’s going to say, ‘You got to be quicker. This ball should be gone. You got to get your depth. You got to sell this a little more. This is a great route, guys. Watch this right guard right here, guys,” Carr said.
“This is awesome. This is perfect right here.’ And you want to know why, Klint, if the Raiders get him, it’s the best hire? If they let him just cook and get him people that match his scheme. Klint Kubak has a scheme that they believe in that they are running no matter what. And here it comes in, this culture and this scheme, that this is who we are. It is so abundantly clear who you are as an offense when you’re in a room with him. You know the standard. You know exactly what’s asked of you. And if you’re not doing it, he tells you, and then you’re gone. He’s just honest.”
