The Seattle Seahawks making the Super Bowl seems to be a good and bad thing for the Las Vegas Raiders. On one hand, most teams that had openings didn’t seem to seriously pursue offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak because he’s not available to hire until after the Super Bowl. On the other hand, the Raiders are behind on filling out their coaching staff as they wait for Kubiak.
In the end, if they think he’s the right head coach, it doesn’t matter how long they have to wait. According to Vincent Bonsignore of California Post, Kubiak is scheduled to interview with the Raiders on Saturday.
Though he can’t officially sign a contract with the team yet, he can give them a verbal commitment that he’s going to accept the job. There’s some momentum building that he could be open to taking the Raiders job.
However, nothing is a guarantee until he signs an actual contract. It also remains possible that the Raiders interview Kubiak for a second time and find that they like another candidate better. According to ESPN’s Ryan McFadden, Denver Broncos quarterbacks coach Davis Webb is still in the mix.
“Kubiak is a front-runner for the job. Raiders interest in Davis Webb is remains really strong,” McFadden wrote on X.
“It feels like Webb could be the team’s fallback plan if they are unable to land Kubiak. This weekend will be important for the team.”
Would Webb or Kubiak Be the Better Fit?
From an experience standpoint, Kubiak is the more logical choice. He has been coaching at the NFL level for over a decade and has been a playcaller for multiple teams. That said, there is some concern that his quieter demeanor might make it difficult for him to thrive with the leadership aspect of being a head coach.
Leadership is not a concern with Webb. As a former quarterback in the NFL, he knows how to lead a team. The problem with him is that he’s never called plays during a regular season NFL game.
He has also only been coaching for three years. The upside with him is very exciting, but it’s possible that he’s just not ready. The Raiders need some stability, and Kubiak would likely bring that. He’s a proven offensive playcaller and should be great for the development of likely No. 1 pick Fernando Mendoza. Webb wouldn’t be a bad choice, but Kubiak is the coach the Raiders should hire if there’s mutual interest.
Are Cardinals in the Mix for Kubiak?
The Arizona Cardinals previously weren’t considered a threat for Kubiak, but according to ESPN’s Peter Schrager, they are planning to interview the coach. On the surface, the Raiders seem to have the more appealing job since they have the No. 1 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, but perhaps Kubiak likes what Arizona is offering.
It would be a big surprise if Kubiak picked the Cardinals over the Raiders, but it wouldn’t be the first time Las Vegas got passed over. The Raiders just have to hope that they can seal the deal during their second interview.
