The Las Vegas Raiders arguably cemented themselves as not only the worst team in the NFL this season, but one of the worst teams we’ve seen in years with a 31-0 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. It was their second 31-0 loss of the season, and the offense only had 75 total yards.
The team averaged 1.79 yards per play, which is the lowest in recorded NFL history. They are also the first team to get shut out by 31+ points since the Houston Texans in 2021. The offense is historically bad, but the defense wasn’t much better against the Eagles.
Outside of defensive end Maxx Crosby, nobody really seemed to show up to play. It has been a very frustrating year for the star pass rusher, who signed a contract extension with the franchise in the offseason. He has remained loyal to the Raiders, but that loyalty is going to get tested this offseason.
Following the loss, Crosby couldn’t muster up anything to say.
“No words, really. To be honest,” Crosby said, via Paul Guiterrez of Raiders.com.
There isn’t much that Crosby could say that will make the loss any easier, and it’s clear that he’s hitting his limit. Unfortunately for the defensive end, there are still three games left in the season.
Will Crosby Get Traded?
During the broadcast, Fox Sports color commentator Greg Olsen suggested that the Raiders should explore trading Crosby in the offseason. At this point, it’s easy to see the logic in a move like that.
Crosby is going to be 29 next season, and does he really want to stick around for a rebuild? He may not want to request a trade, but the Raiders might find that it’s best for the future of the franchise.
He’s the face of the franchise and their best player, but his talents are being wasted right now. Even at 29, he could likely get the Raiders two first-round picks in a trade. That kind of draft capital would go a long way in helping fill out the rest of the roster.
Plus, they’d get a massive contract off the books. It would be a very tough call to make, but it might be the right decision for the Raiders to move on.
Raiders Still Alive for No. 1 Pick
At first glance, the Raiders look very far away from being a competitive football team. There are needs all over the roster, and the coaching staff is a mess.
However, a turnaround could happen quickly if the Raiders get the No. 1 pick and select the right player. Right now, Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza looks like a lock for the top pick if Las Vegas gets it.
If he’s as good as advertised, the Raiders could finally have their quarterback of the future. Once a team finds the right quarterback, it’s a lot easier to build out the rest of the roster. The Raiders won’t be in the playoffs next season, but a 2027 run isn’t out of the question if Mendoza develops into a star quarterback and the team nails the next two drafts.
