The Los Angeles Chargers made a crucial move minutes before the NFL trade deadline, acquiring offensive lineman Trevor Penning from the New Orleans Saints, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The Chargers will give up a 2027 sixth round pick in return.

The deal comes just one day after confirmation that rookie left tackle Joe Alt will miss the remainder of the season due to a re-injured ankle suffered in Sunday’s 27–20 win over the Titans

The timing of this trade couldn’t be more significant for the Chargers, who are scrambling to stabilize their offensive line for a playoff push

Penning, a former first-round pick by the Saints, brings starting experience and versatility to a unit that has been decimated by injuries.

The Impact of Joe Alt’s Loss

There’s no overstating how much Joe Alt meant to this offense.

The second-year tackle from Notre Dame has quickly become one of the most reliable linemen in the entire NFL

In his rookie season, Alt allowed just six sacks over 600 pass-blocking snaps, an exceptional mark for any lineman, let alone a first-year starter.

So far this season, the Chargers’ offense averaged 28 points per game in games he started and finished, compared to just 20.8 points when he didn’t.

The team’s success directly mirrored his availability: 4-0 with Alt and 2-3 without him.

In those games without him, the Chargers pass block win rate dropped to a league-worst 48%, compared to 52.6% when he played the full game.

After the Alt news, the Chargers Super Bowl hopes were demoralized.

But now, just minutes before the end of the trade deadline, the Chargers have made a big move to bring in a replacement.

While no one can replace what Joe Alt brings, the addition of Trevor Penning will certainly help this struggling offensive line unit.

Penning’s Arrival Brings Hope for Stability

The 26-year-old lineman offers the Chargers much-needed flexibility at both tackle and guard.

Drafted 19th overall by New Orleans in 2022, Penning has logged experience across multiple offensive line positions, known for his physicality and downhill blocking style.

These traits fit perfectly in Jim Harbaugh’s system.

Penning’s addition gives the Chargers a potential short-term starter and long-term insurance piece while Alt recovers.

With Rashawn Slater and Joe Alt both out for the season, the Chargers will likely shift Penning back to his natural position at tackle.

His arrival provides much-needed depth, flexibility, and veteran presence on a line that has struggled to stay healthy all season.

The Chargers still face an uphill climb in a tough AFC, but with Penning in the fold, they’ve taken a crucial step toward keeping Herbert upright and their playoff hopes alive.

“We battled and found a way,” Harbaugh said after Sunday’s win. “That’s the kind of fight you want to see from your team.”

Penning will look to help the Bolts continue that fight as they look ahead to playoff aspirations.
