he Los Angeles Chargers are enjoying a dominant 2025 season. Sitting at 9-4 and in second place in the AFC West, the Chargers are in position to make the playoffs for the second straight season– where winning the franchise’s first ever Super Bowl is the main goal. Since hiring head coach Jim Harbaugh at the start of last season, the Chargers have become a force in the NFL and are looking like a franchise primed to be perennial contenders.
But Harbaugh is not the only reason why the Chargers have found success. Thanks to a dominant defense led by defensive coordinator Jesse Minter, the Chargers have created issues for opposing teams’ offenses over the last two seasons– including finishing 2024 giving up the fewest amount of points among NFL defenses. Because of his excellence as the Chargers’ defensive coordinator, Minter has started to garner NFL head coaching interest. But in recent days, Michigan Football fired its head football coach, which could change the trajectory of Minter’s coaching career.
Minter Listed as a Candidate for the Michigan Job
On Wednesday, Dec. 10, Michigan shocked the college football world when it announced that the firing of head coach, Sherrone Moore. Minter, who served as Harbaugh’s defensive coordinator at Michigan, had major success with the Wolverines and was a key factor in the program’s national title in 2023. Yahoo Sports, who named five potential candidates, mentioned Minter as a good candidate for a variety of reasons– but said that continuity was a big part of it.
“If Michigan doesn’t want to completely distance itself from the Harbaugh era and Minter would be intrigued by a return to college football, the school could do far worse than the defensive coordinator from that 2023 national title team,” Yahoo Sports’ Nick Bromberg said. “Minter followed Jim Harbaugh to the Chargers and is in charge of a defense that’s allowing fewer than 21 points per game and has intercepted opposing QBs 15 times while allowing just 12 touchdown passes.”
Hiring Minter would give Michigan a coach that can re-instill the championship culture as well as an elite defensive mind. But bringing Minter back comes with some risks as he is serving a one-year show cause penalty stemming from the Michigan sign stealing scandal.
Minter’s Show Cause
Minter got a less severe punishment than some of the other personnel members involved with the scandal, receiving a show cause penalty that expires at the end of the season. The timing of the show cause expiration could work out though, allowing Minter to finish the season with the Chargers while essentially ensuring that the Michigan job is his if he wants it.
“Yes, Minter was given a show-cause penalty as part of the NCAA’s penalties for recruiting violations that occurred during his time in Ann Arbor,” Blomberg said on Minter’s show cause penalty. “However, his one-year show-cause penalty expires before 2025 concludes. Michigan could avoid NCAA red tape if it waited a bit to hire Minter, who would potentially want to finish out the Chargers’ season anyway.”
Michigan finished 9-3 this season and is preparing to take on Texas in the Citrus Bowl under the guidance of interim head coach, Biff Poggi. But given how high the standards are at Michigan, the program will want to make sure their next head coaching hire is a home run.
