After a short period of confusion regarding the status of Mike McDaniel, the Los Angeles Chargers officially announced on Monday afternoon that he will be their new offensive coordinator.

McDaniel initially unofficially accepted the role of OC with the Chargers last week, though he was still interviewing for head coach openings with the Buffalo Bills and Las Vegas Raiders. He pulled out of the interview with the Bills this week.

Now, the Chargers have officially announced him as their new OC, via their social media channels.

The video features McDaniel sitting down in front of a white backdrop as someone behind the camera tells him it’s going to be an introduction video.

Before introducing himself, McDaniel, who is never lacking with his dry humor, quickly quipped, “This isn’t going to be a vape question, is it? I know how you guys roll.”

As the video continued, McDaniel said, “Sup, Mike McDaniel, offensive coordinator for the Chargers.” The video quickly cuts to black as a smirking emoji pops onto the screen with energetic music in the background.

McDaniel Officially Signs With Chargers

A member of the Shanahan coaching tree, McDaniel has plenty of experience working in high-flying, fast-paced offenses in his coaching career. Though his tenure in Miami ended somewhat unceremoniously as he led them to a 35-33 record with two playoff appearances in four seasons, the enigmatic coach has the brains to lead a high-powered offense.

As head coach, plenty of questions arose around whether McDaniel had what it took to be a leader of a team. Those questions may have been answered, as he was never able to win a playoff game, and seemingly declined as his run in Miami came towards its culmination. A light-hearted and goofy guy might not be the answer to lead a team of football players, but in his new role as OC, some of that leadership pressure gets taken off of him.

Now, McDaniel can focus on what he does best, which is calling offensive plays and scheming new ideas for his team. He has just one season of offensive coordinator experience, which came in 2021 when he was with the San Francisco 49ers. He served as their run game coordinator for the four previous years, then left for the Dolphins in 2022.

Chargers Searching For Defensive Coordinator

Now that McDaniel is officially on the books as the Chargers new offensive coordinator, Jim Harbaugh and ownership are looking towards the other side of the ball to find their new defensive coordinator. Jesse Minter, who served as LA’s DC the last two seasons, took the Baltimore Ravens head coach job, leaving the role vacant in Los Angeles.

So far, the Chargers have interviewed Ravens DC Zach Orr, Titans DC Dennard Wilson, and their own assistant head coach Aubrey Pleasant.

They could look to make what would effectively be a swap by grabbing Orr, or keep things consistent within the building by giving Pleasant his first shot at a coordinator role.

Either way, expect the decision to come sooner rather than later, as the Chargers look to get the ball rolling on their 2026 campaign.
