The Chargers will have a new offensive coordinator

The Los Angeles Chargers are one of six teams remaining with an undefeated record after three weeks, but it comes with a toll.

Los Angeles currently has the 6th-highest scoring offense and will be without one of their more notable signings from this year’s free agency after suffering a season-ending injury.

Running back Najee Harris has suffered a torn Achilles tendon that will force him out for the rest of the season. Harris signed a one-year deal with the organization and will forfeit $4 million in incentives.

The former Pittsburgh Steeler was sharing snaps in the backfield with 2025 first-round draft pick Omarion Hampton before suffering his injury in Week 3.

The Bolts’ coaching staff opened up about losing Harris on Thursday.

Offensive Coordinator On Losing Najee Harris

Najee Harris and Omarion Hampton were the only two running backs who received a run play for the Chargers this season so far.

Chargers offensive coordinator Greg Roman was asked about the loss of Harris after Week 3. Here’s what he had to say about losing the player:

“Painful. Painful. Felt like we were just scratching the surface with Najee. Unfortunately, that (Achilles tear) happened. He’s gonna get great care, rehab and get back. ”

“That’s a tough one. And, it’s all hands on deck now to try to ameliorate that and even out the scales there. There’s gonna be a lot of competition there at running back. Excited to see how that unfolds.”

Hampton has been rushing the bulk of the rushing load, as Harris was returning from an eye injury he suffered before training camp.

In his three games played for the Los Angeles Chargers, Harris ran for 61 yards on 15 carries and had 3 receptions for 25 yards.

Big Role For Rookie

With Najee Harris now placed on injured reserve, rookie running back Omarion Hampton will now have most of the running load for the Los Angeles Chargers.

Hampton has logged 142 yards so far in his rookie year and has been a threat in the receiving game, hauling in 73 yards on 9 catches.

The only running back on the Chargers‘ 53-man roster is Hassan Haskins, who has been receiving snaps at offense but has found value as a return specialist for the organization. Haskins has 141 return yards on six kick returns.

Los Angeles has not made a move to sign another running back after Harris’ injury. The team currently has two running backs, including one with multiple years of experience, on the practice squad and will likely elevate one.

Primarily, Hampton will be the lead back for the Bolts. Now, it will be time for Jim Harbaugh and Greg Roman to plan around the rookie to get the most from him.
