Changes have been made to Jim Harbaugh's coaching staff

Since hiring Jim Harbaugh as head coach, the Los Angeles Chargers have made two trips to the playoffs and have faced two exits in the AFC wildcard.

LA lost to the New England Patriots in the first round of this year’s playoffs, 3-16, with Justin Herbert not having a good game, being held to 159 passing yards on 31 pass attempts, sacked six times, and fumbling the ball twice — the three points scored were the lowest in the wildcard round.

No receiving target on the Bolts recorded more than 40 receiving yards and no running back rushed for more than 32 yards in the loss to New England.

Now, a couple of days after the loss to the Patriots, Los Angeles has made a major announcement on the coaching staff.

Coaching Staff Moves

Greg Roman

Following the defeat to the Patriots, the Chargers have announced that they will part ways with two members of Jim Harbaugh’s coaching staff.

Offensive coordinator Greg Roman and offensive line coach Mike Devlin have been released, leaving a hole in the staff.

Los Angeles had the 11th-highest-scoring offense in the league in Roman’s first season as OC, averaging 23.6 points per game in the 2024-25 season. The offense regressed the following season, averaging 21.6 points per game, the 20th-fewest in the league.

As for Justin Herbert, his numbers slightly regressed with Roman as his offensive coordinator. The Charger star logged in 3,870 passing yards, 23 touchdown passes and 3 interceptions in his first season paired up with Roman. In his second year, Herbert threw for 3,727 yards, 26 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.

The Los Angeles quarterback has been sacked a total of 95 times since Mike Devlin was hired as the offensive line coach. Herbert was sacked 54 times in the 2025-26 season, while being taken down 41 times the previous season.

Not all the blame can be put on Devlin, as the Bolts lost star tackles Joe Alt and Rashawn Slater to season-ending injuries, which hindered Herbert from getting more time in the pass game.

Both coaches had familiarity with a Harbaugh, as both Roman and Devlin previously worked with Jim’s brother, John, back with the Baltimore Ravens.

Losing Another Coordinator

Jesse Minter

If already having to part ways with one coordinator wasn’t harsh enough for the Los Angeles Chargers, they might lose another one.

Bolts’ defensive coordinator Jesse Minter has received head coach interview requests from every single team that has a vacant head coaching job, according to Albert Breer.

The DC, who followed Jim Harbaugh to Los Angeles from Michigan, has the team playing like one of the best defenses over the past two seasons.

In his first season with LA in the 2024-25 season, the Chargers’ defense allowed 17.7 points per game, the lowest in the league. In the 2025-26 season, the Bolts had the 9th-lowest points allowed, allowing just 20 points per game.

The Chargers’ defense held the Patriots to just 16 points in the AFC Wildcard, which is a major feat for Minter and Co., as New England had the second-highest scoring offense in the league, averaging 28.8 points per game in the regular season.

The offseason will be tough for the Bolts as they may need to reorganize most of the coaching staff.
