After the firing of John Harbaugh, rumors started to abound surrounding where the esteemed Super Bowl winning head coach would end up. Very few rumors however discussed who would be replacing him. According to NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah, the answer could lie within the Chargers’ staff.

“Jesse Minter to the Ravens makes a lot of sense,” Jeremiah noted on X. “Familiar, fixes defense & great leader.”

Minter has certainly proven himself to be one of the NFL’s premier defensive coordinators. Now he could be set for a step up into the head coaching ranks. This would not be the first time the Chargers and Ravens have been interconnected for hiring options. Los Angeles recently hired Ravens exec Joe Hortiz to be their general manager.

Now the pipeline could go the other way. Minter has been linked with the Harbaugh family ever since he got his first chance as an assistant under John Harbaugh before joining Jim at Michigan and following him to the NFL.

A Familiar Pipeline Between Baltimore and Los Angeles

Minter could be perfect for the Ravens especially as a defensive minded head coach. He could bring back the defensive identity that seemingly left when Mike Macdonald left for the Seahawks two years ago. Most importantly, it could open up avenues for the Ravens to hire a more innovative mind, potentially a Kevin Stefanski, to run the offense with Lamar and all those weapons.

The real question for Minter though is how much allegiance he has to Jim. While he got his start under John as a defensive assistant, it was Jim that really took him under his wing in the collegiate ranks and brought him along onto his Chargers staff. Furthermore, would Jesse Minter be willing to fill the shoes of his former protege and most importantly, the brother of another one of his biggest coaching mentors?

Proven Defensive Results and a Career-Defining Choice

It’s no secret that Jesse Minter has the defensive know-how and acumen to have success as a head coach in the NFL. Look what happened with Mike Macdonald, and look at where he started. With the Chargers, Minter has founded his defense on a “bend, don’t break” mentality. That has seen them finish in thew top 11 in the NFL in fewest points and yards allowed each of the past two seasons.

He most importantly has gotten the best out of his key players. Derwin James has had career years in consecutive seasons under Minter, with a career high in interceptions this season alone. Another player who has emerged under Minter has been Tuli Tuipolotu, who had to fill the shoes of Joey Bosa. He just had a career high in sacks.

With the defensive pieces that the Ravens have, Minter could almost certainly rejuvenate this unit. Most importantly, as of right now, he is the odds on favorite to be the head coach, ahead of the likes of the Vikings DC Brian Flores and Kliff Kingsbury, the former OC of the Washington Commanders.

The big question is this for Minter. Does he want to continue building his legacy with Jim, and take a more Ben Johnson like path to a head coaching position? Or does he want to try and follow the legacy of his first true mentor while leaving behind his brother? The answer could be career defining.
