The Los Angeles Chargers received some much-needed optimism Friday, but not complete clarity, regarding rookie running back Omarion Hampton ahead of Sunday night.
As CBS Sports noted, Hampton (ankle) has been officially listed as questionable for Sunday’s wild-card game at New England.
But after days of uncertainty, Hampton told reporters he expects to play.
“Yeah, that’s the plan,” Hampton said when asked if he expects to suit up Sunday, per Daniel Popper.
That comment was quickly amplified by Ian Rapoport, who labeled the update “big news” for the Chargers.
However, just minutes earlier, Adam Schefter reported that Los Angeles is officially listing Hampton as questionable for the Wild Card game.
Both reports coming back-to-back in the span of five minutes highlights the tension between optimism and caution surrounding the rookie’s availability.
Hampton Returns to Practice After Missing Two Days
Hampton’s questionable tag comes after a turbulent practice week.
The first-round pick did not practice Wednesday or Thursday while continuing to work back from an ankle injury that has sidelined him since Week 17.
On Friday, however, Hampton returned to the field and was ultimately listed as a limited participant, according to Popper.
That return keeps the door open for Hampton to play in his first career playoff game.
While Hampton says he’s playing, the Chargers are expected to make a final determination roughly 90 minutes before kickoff.
The team has been consistent in signaling caution with the rookie given the physical nature of the matchup.
But the stakes could not be higher in a single-elimination playoff game.
Still, Hampton’s own comments suggest confidence that he’ll be available when it matters most.
Massive Implications in Chargers vs. Patriots
If Hampton is limited or unable to go, the Chargers would again lean on Kimani Vidal.
This would mirror how the Chargers handled things earlier in the season when Hampton was out.
In those games, Vidal delivered strong production, including multiple 100-yard performances while carrying a heavier workload.
But Hampton’s potential return adds an important variable against a Patriots defense known for its discipline and physicality.
His burst and downhill style have become a key part of Los Angeles’ offensive identity.
If Hampton is available, they will lean on him to mitigate the struggling pass protection of the O-line.
Hampton says he plans to play. The injury report says questionable. But Sunday night before kickoff in New England will provide the final answer.
