For all of the Chargers‘ injury woes, the one position that has been weird to assess all year has been that of the wide receiver. With the latest news concerning Quentin Johnston, the situation could become even weirder.
Ahead of their game against the Chiefs, one with massive playoff implications, three receivers had initially appeared on the injury report after Wednesday’s practice: Keenan Allen(rest), Derius Davis(ankle, out ), and Ladd Mcconkey(foot). On Friday, Quentin Johnston joined them with a groin injury.
While the designation was listed as questionable for the game, the Chargers could be taking extra precautions with an already decimated receiver room. By giving him a lighter load during Friday practice, they could keep him fresher as a limited participant, forcing the Chiefs to think about who could suit up on game day for them.
The more obvious, yet concerning option could be that Johnston re-aggravated the injury during practice and the Chargers had to discuss his status for the injury report. This is important to note as Johnston has already been listed as questionable twice this season in Weeks 6 and 11. In Week 6, he did not play, but in Week 11, he was able to suit up. Chances are his status for this pivotal game is a complete toss-up.
Potential Fallout If Johnston Sits
Should Johnston not be able to go, heavier workloads could be had by many. Mcconkey, although listed on the injury report, should be good to go and receive a hefty workload, as should rookie tight end and breakout star Oronde Gadsden II.
Or the Chargers could also lean on their top 10 rushing attack, with both Omarion Hampton and Kimani Vidal fresh and ready to go out of the backfield.
Another potential sleeper option could be the usage of Tre Harris, a rookie receiver who hasn’t featured to much in the offense, but looks primed for a breakout game. His ability to make tough catches in the middle of the field and create YAC opportunities could be a positive for Herbert as he continues to struggle through his hand injury. Look for him be a gadget like player in this offense with a big play threat.
Yet another rookie option could be former Penn State standout Keandre Lambert-Smith. He has been a healthy inactive all year long, struggling for playing time. However, the preseason standout could prove himself in a highly integral game for his squad.
A Glimpse Into the Chargers’ WR Future
The main problem for the Chargers has been the congestion of their receiving room. Now with all the injuries, this could be a time to truly evaluate what they have in the room talent-wise. Keenan Allen is 33 years of age and won’t be a solid contributor for much longer. The Chargers should use these opportunities to get as many looks as possible at some future prospects.
Johnston’s injury is not ideal, but it could reshape how the Chargers look at their future. With a lot of depth in the position group, I would not be surprised if there were several breakout performances on Sunday.
