The Los Angeles Rams survived a nailbiter in the divisional round of the 2025 NFL Playoffs, as they escaped with a 20-17 overtime victory over the Chicago Bears. That has set the stage for another battle between the Rams and the Seattle Seahawks, and considering how this will be the third time these two teams have played each other this season, it’s safe to say they are quite familiar with each other.
The Rams and Seahawks split their two matchups during the regular season, and if those games were anything to go by, this final battle is going to be a thrill to watch. One guy Los Angeles is a bit more familiar with than other members of Seattle is linebacker Ernest Jones IV, and star quarterback Matthew Stafford knows just how big a challenge he and the rest of his teammates have on their hands.

Perhaps the biggest reason for Los Angeles’ stellar season has been the play of Stafford under center. In his 17th season, Stafford turned in arguably the best year of his career, as he led the league in passing yards (4,707) and passing touchdowns (46). As a result of his strong play, Stafford is the favorite to win the 2025 MVP Award.
In Seattle, several things have gone right this season. While Sam Darnold has excelled under center, the defense has also turned itself into one of the most fearsome units in the league. At the heart of everything for the Seahawks is Jones, who put together a breakout campaign in his first full year with the team. In 15 games, Jones racked up 126 tackles, 0.5 sacks, five interceptions (one of which he returned for a touchdown), and seven pass deflections.
Before finding his way to Seattle, Jones spent the first three seasons of his career with Los Angeles, where he was teammates with Stafford. While these two are familiar with each other as opponents, they also know what it’s like to be teammates with each other. Ahead of this game, Stafford was very complimentary of Jones, acknowledging his big role on the Seahawks’ defense.
“I think Ernest is playing at an all-time level and playing great in the middle,” Stafford said of Jones. “He’s kind of running the show for those guys.”

How the Rams handle Jones throughout this game could determine the outcome, as he does a little bit of everything. Jones is an elite run defender who has a knack for closing holes in the blink of an eye, and he also can hold up well in coverage, where he can match up against whoever he lines up across from.
Stafford has developed a reputation for being able to manipulate linebackers in coverage before firing to an open target, but if there’s anyone who knows his tricks, it’s Jones. This is a fascinating matchup for a slew of reasons, and it’s one that could just decide who advances to the Super Bowl. Kickoff for the NFC Championship Game is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET on Sunday afternoon.
