Rams Urged to Add Former All-Pro WR for Super Bowl Push With Matthew Stafford

USA Today's Nate Davis named Matthew Stafford and the Los Angeles Rams one of the top landing spots for wide receiver Stefon Diggs.

The Los Angeles Rams are trying to go on at least one more deep playoff run with Matthew Stafford still behind center. To do that in 2026, the team might need to add one more offensive weapon.

That’s what USA Today’s Nate Davis argued this week. On Wednesday, Davis named the Rams one of six potential landing spots for one of the top receivers left in NFL free agency — Stefon Diggs.

“For a team so roundly criticized for picking QB Ty Simpson in the first round of the draft, adding Diggs on a short-term contract could nicely bolster a team clearly in a Super Bowl window of opportunity while costing a lot less than, say, trading for A.J. Brown,” wrote Davis. “Diggs, who typically splits time between the slot and lining up wide, could also reduce the load on fellow graybeard Davante Adams, who’s a year older than Diggs and limped down the stretch with hamstring issues in 2025.

“The Rams also simply lack depth at the position beyond Nacua and Adams.”

Last year, Diggs posted 85 receptions, 1,013 receiving yards and four touchdowns. He made first-team All-Pro with the Buffalo Bills during 2020. In that season, he led the NFL with 127 receptions and 1,535 receiving yards.

Why the Rams Should Pursue WR Stefon Diggs

Diggs is now six years removed from his first-team All-Pro nomination. During 2022, he made second-team All-Pro, but that was four years ago.

Diggs most recently made the Pro Bowl during 2023.

Still, he appears to have something left in the tank. While he will turn 33 years old in November, the Rams shouldn’t be too concerned about bringing him in on a 1-year deal.

In fact, his career timeline could be a perfect match for the Rams given the team’s window is closing soon with Stafford and fellow wideout Davante Adams.

During 2025, Diggs posted his seventh 1,000-yard campaign in the past eight years. The receiver didn’t reach that plateau during 2024, but he played just eight games that season.

Diggs returned healthy in 2025 to lead the AFC champions in receiving.

This offseason, Diggs faced legal trouble with allegations of strangulation and assault and battery charges from his former live-in chef. A jury in Dedham, Massachusetts, though, found the receiver not guilty of those charges on Tuesday.

The court ruling should enable Diggs to return his primary focus to football.

Rams WR Depth Entering 2026 Rookie Minicamp

All eyes around the Rams will be on first-round quarterback Ty Simpson this weekend. The team will host its rookie minicamp from May 8-10 with Simpson the obvious main attraction.

But when the entire Rams roster reconvenes together for its next offseason workout on May 26, a lot of attention should center on the team’s lack of receiving depth.

Puka Nacua and Adams are a great 1-2 punch. Veteran tight end Tyler Higbee agreed to return this offseason too.

But the team did little to bolster its receiving corps this offseason. After not signing a new wideout, the Rams waited until the sixth round to add a wide receiver in CJ Daniels.

That means, in all likelihood, Xavier Smith is set to return as the team’s WR3. Smith was third for the Rams wideouts with 303 receiving yards last season.

To Smith’s credit, he averaged 16.8 yards per catch. That’s the kind of big-play ability NFL teams need from a WR3.

But the Rams could use more proven receiving depth, especially since their WR2 is going to turn 34 years old in December.

Diggs isn’t much younger, but he could provide that insurance and depth. He could give the Rams short-term upside as well.
