The 2025 season saw the Los Angeles Rams utilize the three-tight-end package, also known as 13-man personnel, more than any other team in the league.

Sean McVay mentioned the tight end group had more players than the other positions, leaning into that when playcalling for the offense. The head coach also mentioned that using all four tight ends on the roster would lessen the workload for the other offensive weapons.

All four main tight ends on the team recorded over 200 receiving yards and more than 3 receiving touchdowns, accounting for almost 40% Matthew Stafford‘s passing touchdowns on the season.

With the Rams now in the offseason, the future of the offense is in question, but a player on a rookie contract is poised to take a big step in his sophomore season.

Rams 2025 second-round pick Terrance Ferguson was at the bottom of the Los Angeles Rams tight end depth chart in terms of targets, but was able to contribute in some games.

With three other players ahead of him, he was able to get some quality snaps in Sean McVay’s offense.

Due to some players who will become free agents in just a matter of a few weeks, Ferguson’s role on the Rams could expand into the 2026 season.

Dalton Wasserman of Pro Football Focus named the former Oregon Duck as an early breakout candidate for the Rams in the 2026 season, shortly following the team’s exit from the NFC Championship.

“The Rams love their multiple-tight-end sets, and veteran Tyler Higbee is slated to be a free agent this offseason. That leaves Colby Parkinson and Terrance Ferguson as the top internal options remaining at the position,” Wasserman wrote.

“Parkinson is a favorite of quarterback Matthew Stafford, but Ferguson racked up 250 receiving yards and three touchdowns this season, including postseason play. Incredibly, he produced that yardage total across just 12 receptions. More big plays from Ferguson should be in store in 2026.”

Higbee can be considered the greatest Rams tight end of all time, but his injury concerns over the last few seasons may be a notable deterrent in the Rams’ decision if they would like to bring the tight end back.

The second-round pick was a healthy scratch multiple games this season due to the number of other tight ends. So, with one tight end possibly leaving, Ferguson should be able to capitalize on the opportunity.

Terrance Ferguson was able to contribute in some offensive capacity in 8 games this season.

While there isn’t much of a highlight reel, Sean McVay has been impressed by what he has seen from the second-rounder.

“There’s always been confidence in him. You just never know throughout the course of a season, guys are going to get their opportunities and usually it’s going to be earned and sometimes it organically works itself out,” McVay said of the tight end, via Rams Wire.

“He’s a guy that’s stayed humble, just worked in the background. There was never a loss of confidence. It was really just, ‘OK, how do we figure out what is the offensive identity? How do we maximize his skill set?’”

Now Ferguson is on track to get more opportunities in the 2026 season and could be able to take over the lead tight end role on the Rams.
