In the 2025 season, the Miami Dolphins made the decision to move off former starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. After 14 games, the Dolphins benched Tagovailoa in favor of rookie seventh-round pick Quinn Ewers. The decision was made after head coach Mike McDaniel deemed Tagovailoa’s play “not good enough.”
Rookie quarterback Quinn Ewers started the final three games. He went 1-2 as the team’s starter and was 55-for-83 with 622 passing yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions. Regarding the possibility of Ewers remaining the team’s starting quarterback, McDaniel said, “I wouldn’t close the door on that.”
Additionally, prior to the Dolphins’ regular season finale against New England, NFL Network insider Cameron Wolfe revealed that Miami was planning to bring in a quarterback to create some competition for the 2026 starting job.
Dolphins Predicted to Add Quarterback
A new mock draft by The Draft Network has the Dolphins drafting Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson with the 11th overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft. They said, “The Dolphins still need a quarterback moving forward. Ty Simpson had an inconsistent finish to his season, but I believe there are many different factors that played a part in that. Simpson, with a talented offensive play-caller like McDaniel, could have some early success and give the Dolphins their guy for the next decade.”
The last time the Miami Dolphins took a quarterback in the first round, it was also an Alabama quarterback. At the time, the people in charge of that decision were general manager Chris Grier and head coach Brian Flores. Now it would be head coach Mike McDaniel, who is expected back for the 2026 season, and the new general manager.
At the moment, Simpson has yet to announce his decision on the draft. He could forego his senior season and enter the draft, or return to Alabama for his senior season. The 2025 season was the first for Simpson as the team’s full-time starter. He went 305-for-473 with 3,567 passing yards, 28 touchdowns, and five interceptions. His completions and attempts led the SEC.
Simpson struggled in his last game with Alabama. He started in their 38-3 playoff loss to Indiana. He went 12-for-16 for 67 yards before leaving the game. He suffered a cracked rib during the game and was unable to continue.
Ty Simpson Prospect Profile
Simpson is a somewhat polarizing quarterback prospect. CBS Sports draft experts Mike Renner and Josh Edwards had a large gap when ranking the player. Renner had him as the eigth best prospect in the class, while Edwards had him 68th. Renner cited his poise and ability to read defenses. Edwards noted his lack of accuracy when pressured.
In Damian Parson’s Ty Simpson draft profile for Bleacher Report, he labeled the Alabama quarterback with a “top quarterback with a savvy, polished skill set that translates well into professional offenses.” Despite having limited experience, Parson noted that Simpson has “poise, pocket navigation, and passing accuracy that scream long-term NFL starter.” He also agreed with Edwards’ assessment that Simpson struggled to maintain his accuracy when pressured. In his final ranking he had Simpson as the No. 30 overall prospect and compared him to former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo.
