Quinn Ewers Gets Brutally Honest on Replacing Tua Tagovailoa as Dolphins’ Quarterback

The 2025 campaign was not a pretty one for the Miami Dolphins. While they finished with a 7-10 record, general manager Chris Grier and head coach Mike McDaniel both got fired, while starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa got benched in favor of seventh-round rookie Quinn Ewers for the final three games of the season.

While the Dolphins have hired Jon-Eric Sullivan to be their new general manager and Jeff Hafley to be their new head coach, the quarterback position is still a big question mark for the team. What the future holds for Ewers is unknown, and he even admitted recently that he didn’t expect to replace Tagovailoa under center when he was sent to the bench late in the season.

Ewers was a highly-touted quarterback coming out of high school, but a rocky college career led to his draft stock falling. Some folks didn’t even expect Ewers to get selected, but Miami decided to take a flier on him in the seventh round, and that move proved to be prudent, as Tagovailoa’s struggles led to him taking a seat on the bench.

During his limited time on the field, Ewers was decent, as he threw for 622 yards and three touchdowns, while also throwing three interceptions. It’s worth noting that the Dolphins’ offense was not fully healthy during this time, which made Ewers’ life a bit more difficult under center. Still, he managed to lead the team to a surprise upset victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, which played a major role in their missing out on the playoffs.

While it appears unlikely Tagovailoa will be Miami’s starting quarterback in 2026, that doesn’t necessarily mean that Ewers is going to remain the team’s starter moving forward either. Heck, he didn’t even think he’d be the guy called upon to initially replace Tagovailoa, as he believed that Zach Wilson was going to get the nod over him.

“To be honest, no,” Ewers said in an interview with RG.org when asked if he expected to replace Tagovailoa. “But I feel like I do a good job of just kind of rolling with the cards that are dealt. I didn’t put too much thought into not expecting it, if that makes sense after the fact.”

While Ewers was thrown into a tough situation, there’s no shame in admitting that he was probably in over his head when he found his way onto the field for the Dolphins. That doesn’t mean Ewers won’t be successful in the NFL, but he could probably benefit from getting more time to develop behind the scenes.

With a full-scale rebuild on the horizon for Miami, chances are it will hold onto Ewers, but it will likely try to find a more stable option at quarterback for the time being. Ewers has potential, but he’s likely not going to succeed anytime soon under center for the Dolphins, simply because their roster is in rough shape. Miami’s new-look front office has a lot of work to do this offseason, and what it does at the quarterback position is easily its most important piece of business.
