While the Mike McDaniel era failed to end the Miami Dolphins’ playoff win drought, it likely provided the team’s most exciting moments since Dan Marino’s retirement.
In McDaniel’s four years with the Dolphins, the team lacked physicality and the ability to win games down the stretch of the season. However, what they lacked in December success, they made up for in the first months of the season with explosive scoring performances.
And at the helm of those performances were Pro Bowl quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and All-Pro wide receiver Tyreek Hill. After a disappointing 2025 season, the Dolphins decided to cut ties with both players, but with Hill remaining a free agent and Tagovailoa in Atlanta, the pair could hypothetically reunite. Now, Tagovailoa has shared his feelings on Atlanta signing his former teammate.
Former Miami Dolphins Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa Shares Feelings on Tyreek Hill
Prior to his first regular season with the Atlanta Falcons, former Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was asked about the idea of reuniting with Tyreek Hill with the Falcons. Tagovailoa said, “Well, I would want him to get better. As a person, be able to do things he would be able to do when he’s way, way done. But that’s also not my call on the end. I want to make sure he’s good, and he’s able to still run with his kids later on in life when he’s done. That’s it.”
Despite the on-field success that the pair achieved together, the relationship was up-and-down. Once Hill arrived in Miami prior to the 2022 season, he made a point of talking up his new quarterback to the press, declaring him the “most accurate quarterback in the NFL” despite previously playing for MVP quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
What followed the next two seasons would apparently prove Hill right as Tagovailoa helped him achieve the two best statistical seasons of his career. In 2022 and 2023, Hill was named a first-team All-Pro as he had the two best seasons by a wide receiver in Miami Dolphins franchise history.
Unfortunately, despite their statistical success, playoff success did not follow as Miami bowed out in the Wild Card round in each of those seasons.
The End of Tagovailoa and Hill’s Pairing
Then, in 2024, statistical and team regular season success went away as well. The Dolphins failed to make the postseason, and Hill did not surpass 1,000 receiving yards for the first time since 2019, when Hill missed a quarter of the season with an injury.
Frustration grew as well, which led to Tyreek Hill removing himself from Miami’s regular season finale, once it became apparent that the team would be eliminated from playoff contention. And while Tagovailoa was unavailable for that game due to a hip injury, he would go on to express displeasure at Hill’s decision.
Then, prior to the 2025 season, Tagovailoa told the Miami media that Hill needed to regain the Dolphins’ trust and work that relationship back up. While Tagovailoa would then state that the relationship was repaired, Hill’s future with the Dolphins would soon come to an abrupt end as he suffered a devastating dislocated knee injury in Week 4 of the regular season.
For those hoping for a reunion between the pair, it should be good news that Tagovailoa spoke highly of Hill and did add that he’d spoken with his former Dolphins teammate. Tagovailoa said, “I got a FaceTime call from Tyreek throughout OTAs and whatnot. But yeah, just talking.”
